An old altar stone from the site of the former chapel is set into the outer wall of the new church as a memorial. This detail offers a glimpse into Lirstal’s local history, while the Elzbach Valley provides the scenic setting. Two distinct perspectives therefore take centre stage during your stay: trails and landscape, and the history of the village.

Hiking Trails and Scenery in the Elzbach Valley

Lirstal lies in the Elzbach Valley. The meadows around the village are described as floodplain meadows, where the Elzbach and Uersfelder Bach streams meet. Hiking trails through meadows, fields and floodplains are associated with Lirstal; the hiking area also includes forests and volcanic landscapes. Open spaces and other types of scenery therefore sit side by side, without every route necessarily following the same course.

The suggested hike “The Upper Elzbach and Its Side Valleys” includes Lirstal in a circular tour through the upper Elzbach Valley. A route description published in 2024 also mentions an open, scenic section on the route from Retterath to Lirstal. The two descriptions emphasise different things: a circular tour in one case, and an open stretch of trail in the other. Conditions on the suggested route may change, so check them before making specific plans.

Chapel, Church and Local History

The former chapel stood on a hill beside the village and burned down in 1825. St. Martinius was its patron saint and also the patron saint of Lirstal. An old altar stone from the former chapel site was set into the outer wall of the new church as a memorial. The former chapel and the surviving stone give the village’s history a tangible connection to the past.

Today’s settlement developed from the former hamlets of Liersdal and Teurnebach. Lirstal was mentioned on 15 June 1336 under the historical name “Leppelzal”. A later milestone in the village’s history is the Church of Our Lady of Fatima: it was solemnly consecrated on 4 May 1952 and built to the designs of Prof. Dr. Fritz Thoma of Trier. It is considered the only church in the Diocese of Trier dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. Together, these details show how the settlement and its ecclesiastical history have changed, without conflating the former chapel with the later church.

Putting Hiking and Cycling into Context

The first two sections of the Elztal Cycle Path, between Uersfeld, Lirstal and Oberelz, were completed in 2011. This dated milestone in the path’s development adds a regional cycling context to the hiking connections. When planning your trip, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the hiking trails associated with Lirstal and the cycle path’s own development history.

The Volcanic Eifel as a Regional Setting

Beyond Lirstal, the Volcanic Eifel provides a geological and scenic setting. A total of 77 maars have been identified in the Volcanic Eifel, and 350 eruption centres have been counted, about 270 of them dating to the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago.

The Volcanic Eifel Trails are also part of this wider regional perspective. They lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig, are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, full-day hikes and multi-day walks. The range of hike durations can help you choose between a shorter outing and a longer hiking trip. These trails and geological details describe the Volcanic Eifel, not additional features of Lirstal.

Lirstal as a Place to Stay

Lirstal is considered more of a quiet place for relaxation than a destination with a packed sequence of attractions. At the same time, it is regarded as a starting point for excursions to places of interest in the surrounding area. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh up whether to focus your stay mainly on hiking and local history or also plan trips to nearby places. These different priorities can help you choose the right setting for your trip.
