Center Parcs Park Eifel, a large leisure and bungalow park, is located in the forested municipal area of Gunderath. Its facilities bring together water, play, nature and sports activities in one place. This makes it a clear focus when planning your trip: you can choose from different ways to spend your leisure time instead of limiting your stay to a single theme. As individual activities and their operating conditions may change, check what is currently available before travelling.
Leisure activities around Park Eifel
The park includes the Aqua Mundo water park, the Kids Factory indoor play area and the Nature Adventure Park. Treasure hunts add to the play activities. For a sporting change of pace, there are tennis and squash, as well as mountain biking and Nordic walking. This means there are activities in the water and indoors alongside outdoor pursuits. The surrounding Vulkaneifel setting adds fishing at Heilbachsee, mountain biking and Nordic walking. Aqua Mundo is part of the leisure offering within the park; Heilbachsee and the outdoor activities draw on the regional setting.
History in Gunderath
The branch chapel of St. Quirinus offers a different focus. Built in 1785, it is dedicated to St. Quirinus and forms stop 23 on the “Around the Hochkelberg” History Trail. Its place on the History Trail gives the chapel a clear historical connection. Gunderath thus brings leisure activities and a local historical connection together: two distinct themes to consider when choosing what interests you on your trip.
The Vulkaneifel: a geological setting
For a broader geological perspective, it is worth looking at the Vulkaneifel. To date, 77 maars have been identified there and 350 eruption centres counted, about 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. The figures and chronology give the landscape a subject of its own, ranging from the number of maars and eruption centres to the region’s most recent known volcanic activity.
Hiking, cycling and museums in the region
The Vulkaneifel trails lead to scenic highlights on either side of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted, and include half-day walks, day hikes and multi-day hikes. Two specific routes illustrate different formats: the Vulcano Trail is a 26.2-kilometre circular route east of Schalkenmehren. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. When comparing them, it is not just the distance that matters, but also the type of route: a circular trail or a stage between two places. For mountain bikers, the Trailpark Vulkaneifel has a network of trails around 750 kilometres long, with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Museums also offer different perspectives. The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on volcanism in the western Eifel. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum with a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. The region’s volcanic theme can thus be explored either through landscape models and exhibits or through a specific geological feature.
