Brücktal brings together three streams that flow through the village, a branch church dating from 1733, and a hiking trail linked to local history. Those choosing Brücktal for a trip to the Volcanic Eifel will find specific themes to help plan their visit: local history, a hike, and other regional attractions related to volcanism and the landscape.

Streams and local history

The Nitzbach, Welcheratherbach and Winsenbach flow through Brücktal. A former bridge gave the village its previous name, Brück. Thus, three named waterways meet a place name that recalls a former structure. Together, they provide a distinctive introduction to Brücktal’s history and landscape.

Church and cultural monument

The Catholic branch church on Kapellenweg is a two-bay hall church dating from 1733. The church is also home to a basalt shaft cross, likewise dating from 1733. The church and cross offer a tangible cultural and historical point of interest for a stay that includes Brücktal’s local history as well as hiking.

Hiking the Stumpfarm Trail

The Stumpfarm Trail is a circular hiking route that starts and ends in Boos. Its length is given as around 15 kilometres; the more precise distance is 14.6 kilometres. The route is rated moderate and has 264 metres of ascent and descent. It follows the Nitzbach to Brücktal and passes through the districts of Boos, Kirsbach, Brücktal and Arbach.

Along the route, information boards and pillars provide a chronological account of the Stumpfarm story. Their content can be updated by the tourism provider. For navigation, it is important to note that the trail marking is incomplete in some sections. Download the GPX track and map in advance and check the current route page before setting out; route details may change.

The Volcanic Eifel: maars and hiking options

The Volcanic Eifel provides a broader geological context for planning your trip. So far, 77 maars have been identified there. A total of 350 volcanic eruption centres have also been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmener Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which occurred around 10,900 years ago. Eifel maars formed when rising magma encountered water-bearing rock layers, triggering powerful explosions.

The Volcanic Eifel also offers hiking routes of varying lengths. The Volcanic Eifel Trails are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, full-day hikes and multi-day treks. One specific example is stage 11 of the Eifelsteig, from Daun to Manderscheid, at 23.4 kilometres. The 26.2-kilometre Vulcano Trail is a circular route east of Schalkenmehren. Cycling routes in the Volcanic Eifel lead to geological sites. The Volcanic Eifel Trail Park has a mountain bike trail network of around 750 kilometres and more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain.

Museums and other cultural attractions

In Daun, the Eifel Volcano Museum displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum; its geological exhibits include a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. In Gerolstein, the Natural History Museum displays stone artefacts from the region’s geological history across three floors and is considered the largest and oldest geological museum in the Eifel.

The Ulmen castle ruins also combine cultural history with landscape: they rise above the steep bank of Ulmener Maar, and parts of the upper castle remain. In Manderscheid, the narrow Lieser valley separates the two castles and forms their shared natural and cultural setting. These destinations complement Brücktal’s own features with other distinct themes within the Volcanic Eifel.
