Eppenbrunn lies on the Palatinate-Lorraine border, where the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve gives way to the Northern Vosges. The town is a state-recognized climatic health resort. When planning your trip, you can focus on the surrounding landscape and activities related to sandstone and border trails. There are also local attractions that offer other ways to spend the day. You can get to know Eppenbrunn through both Altschlossfelsen and its hiking routes, and its local leisure activities.
Altschlossfelsen: Sandstone and History
Altschlossfelsen is a sandstone ridge approximately 1.3 kilometers long and is considered the longest of its kind in the Palatinate. In 1991, it was listed as a protected cultural monument. The image of Diana carved into the rock commemorates the Romans’ passage through the area. Together, the rock formation and the image of Diana offer two different points of interest: the geological character of the sandstone and a reference to the area’s Roman past.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
The 10-kilometer Altschlosspfad is a premium hiking trail that leads to Altschlossfelsen. It is considered family-friendly and runs along the German-French border. One section is marked as a Way of St. James and forms part of a medieval pilgrimage route. The trail also leads to the Quellbäche des Eppenbrunner Baches nature reserve in the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve.
The Grenzweg Eppenbrunn is an approximately 12-kilometer circular route that runs from SpieĂźweiher along the German-French border to Altschlossfelsen. At around 12 kilometers, this loop is about two kilometers longer than the 10-kilometer Altschlosspfad. When choosing, you can therefore consider both the distance and the trail features described: the Altschlosspfad includes the Way of St. James markings and the nature reserve, while the Grenzweg is described as a circular route starting at SpieĂźweiher.
Another hiking option is the Eulenfels-Tour. It leads to a sandstone formation with views across the Palatinate Forest as far as Götzenbruck in France. This adds another sandstone-themed option with views across the border to the trails that focus on Altschlossfelsen.
Leisure Activities in Town
There are various activities beyond the hiking trails, too. Eppenbrunn Leisure Park includes a playground, sports equipment and a Kneipp facility. The options range from places to play to exercise and Kneipp treatments.
A local operator offers donkey hikes with trained donkeys around Eppenbrunn. These experiences include an introduction to leading, saddling, packing and handling the animals. If you’d like to try a guided activity with an animal, this is an alternative to the hiking trails.
Adventure Golfpark Eppenbrunn has twelve holes. Together with the leisure park and donkey hikes, it adds activities that are not focused solely on hiking.
The trails described differ in distance and route; the leisure park, donkey hikes and Adventure Golfpark offer more options to consider when planning your trip.
