Hirschthal serves as a starting point for hikes in the border region around Wegelnburg, Hohenburg, Fleckenstein, Blumenstein and Wasigenstein, and is also a stop on two cycling routes.

Hiking to Rocks and Castles

The path climbs to Bruderfelsen via trails and forest roads; from there, panoramic views stretch across the forest and Fleckenstein Castle. After Hirschthal, the Felsenland Sagenweg initially follows the Hichtenbach valley before continuing into the forest. From the foot of Fleckenstein Castle, the path continues to Hirschthal. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Fleckenstein Castle is a Wasgau rock castle right on the German-French border with Alsace. It was probably built on a sandstone rock at the beginning of the 12th century. The castle offers the three-hour Rätselburg family adventure trail; check in advance whether it is available during your visit.

Comparing Two Cycling Routes

The 17 km Schmuggler-Tour is a circular route that alternates between forests and open meadow valleys; Hirschthal is a stop along the way. The Hirschthal e-bike station is right on this German-French route. The Hiwwe un driwwe-Tour is considerably longer, at around 33 km, and is also a circular route. It passes through French and German villages, as well as ponds and scenic meadow valleys; Hirschthal is a stop on this route too. The routes therefore differ both in length and in the landscapes described.

There is an e-bike charging and bicycle repair station in the village centre. The e-bike station in Hirschthal is open year-round. Check the latest information about the station and route conditions before setting off.

Getting Your Bearings Locally

The covered Hirschthal MĂĽhle bus stop is at the entrance to the village and is accessible at all times. The Queichtal Nahverkehrsgesellschaft is responsible for bus routes and connections in the SĂĽdwestpfalz. Check the latest information about the stop and connections before travelling.

A Glimpse of the SĂĽdwestpfalz

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the SĂĽdwestpfalz. Well-maintained, waymarked trails wind through dense forests, over gentle hills and past impressive red sandstone rocks. Near Hinterweidenthal stands the 14-metre-high Teufelstisch, a popular destination. The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the rock formation of the same name, a massif around 1.5 kilometres long.

Historical highlights of the Südwestpfalz include Gräfenstein Castle, which offers a glimpse into medieval life. Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today. In Hauenstein, the German Shoe Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, showcases the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the Südwestpfalz and how shoes are made. Alt-Dahn is also one of the three Dahner Castles, which are popular destinations.
