Herold combines a long history of settlement with direct hiking connections to the Jammertal. The Backes and the history of its mills shape the local character; further hiking and cycling options can be found in the wider Aar-Einrich region.

Backes and local history

Herold is considered a post-Carolingian clearing settlement and was first mentioned around 1260. It had historical ties to the Vierherrischen area and later to the Duchy of Nassau. The oldest building in the village is the historic Backes; it is thought to date from around 1500. The original houses were grouped around this Backes. Two distinct points in time therefore come together here: the first mention refers to Herold as a settlement, while the estimated construction date refers to the Backes as a building.

Mills and historic working life

A mill near Herold was mentioned in 1197 as the Heyer Mill and later called the Haarmühle. The Dillenberger Mill was mentioned in 1733 within the historic area of Herold. An ironworks was established near a mill by Herold in 1671; in 1696, a brewery, a distillery and a bakery were set up in the same area for the ironworks’ workers. These events from different periods offer a glimpse into the area’s history of milling and industry.

Further along the Dörsbach Valley, the power of the Dörsbach was once harnessed by 25 mills. The mills that used this water power are no longer operating today. The historical perspective thus extends beyond individual mills near Herold to encompass the valley as a former place of work.

Hiking between Herold and the Dörsbach Valley

A hiking route leads from Herold through the Jammertal to Obernhof. The Jammertal Trail runs through the Dörsbach Valley between Obernhof and Katzenelnbogen. Obernhof is therefore both the destination of the route from Herold and one of the Jammertal Trail’s endpoints. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

In the wider Einrich area, much of the landscape lies within Nassau Nature Park. Hills, valleys and ravines there are often accessible only on foot. Hiking trails in the Aar-Einrich region also lead through forests and meadows and offer views of the Einrich heights and the Aar Valley. Further along the Dörsbach Valley, the Lieselei and Winkelei viewpoints offer views into a natural valley. Check current trail conditions and access to the viewpoints in advance.

Cycling and culture in the wider region

In the wider Aar-Einrich region, cycling routes offer both leisurely rides and more challenging mountain biking excursions through flat and hilly terrain. Check current route conditions and available facilities before setting out.

The region also offers a range of cultural points of interest, including historic villages, churches, castles, museums and guided tours. This offers a different focus from a hike or cycling tour. Before planning a specific visit, check the opening hours and guided tour options.
