Berghausen combines a themed hiking trail with a local history that can be read in its half-timbered houses, bridges and historical accounts. The Heart Path of Peace makes hiking a clear focus: Berghausen is its starting area, and the first stop is at the old Berghausen bridge site, designated a natural monument.
The Heart Path of Peace
The 8.7-kilometre route is designed as a themed pilgrimage trail. Its heart-shaped course includes 13 stops with prompt boards, as well as wooden seating and heart-shaped features. The individual stops give the trail a thematic framework, while the scenery is also part of the route. It runs through the Dörsbach Valley and offers distant views across the Taunus.
The Heart Path is considered an easy hike and can be used year-round; sturdy footwear is recommended. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out. For getting there, you can consider a parking option and public transport. Check their current availability in advance, too.
Half-Timbered Houses and Historic Buildings in the Village
The State Register of Cultural Monuments, as of 8 June 2026, lists several buildings in Berghausen. At HauptstraĂźe 11 is a half-timbered house with decorative slatework dating from 1857. The entries at KirchstraĂźe 4 include the residence and outbuildings of a three-sided farmstead. The half-timbered house there dates from the 18th century; the property also includes a rubble-stone stable with an open-sided porch.
Southwest of the built-up area is the two-arched bridge over the Dörsbach. It is built of rubble stone and brick and dates from the 19th century. At Panngasse 1 is a partly solid-built half-timbered house, with surfaces that are plastered or clad in slate. It is believed to date from the 17th or 18th century. Half-timbering, slate, plaster and rubble stone illustrate different building methods, visible in specific houses and in the bridge construction.
Older Traces and Regional History
Berghausen’s origins are dated to the Carolingian period, between the 8th and 9th centuries; its early purpose is thought to have been as a stopping place on an old ridgeway. The oldest surviving houses, by contrast, date from the 18th century. A bridge structure over the Dörsbach has been documented in connection with Berghausen’s history since 1608.
Mining is also part of the village’s history: residents of Berghausen worked in the surrounding ore mines. A mineral spring within Berghausen’s municipal area was developed into a mineral water well in 1912–1913. In this rural area, local tradition links the origins of the Mattebach with healing effects for eye ailments.
Einrich Museum in Katzenelnbogen
In nearby Katzenelnbogen, the Einrich Museum focuses on the history of the Einrich region. Topics include local history, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, crafts, mining, agriculture, rural work and domestic culture. The museum offers guided tours year-round by arrangement; schedule a visit in advance, as arrangements may change.
When choosing accommodation, you can decide whether the Heart Path or the area’s architecture and local history will be the main focus of your stay. Berghausen offers concrete points of interest for both: an 8.7-kilometre themed hike, buildings from various centuries and accounts of the region.
