The Einrich Museum and historic walks offer two perspectives on the cultural history of Katzenelnbogen. The museum covers topics from local history to crafts and domestic culture; a described route passes through several parts of the town and includes notable buildings. When planning your visit, you can choose between a museum visit covering a broad range of themes and a route with specific stops.
The Einrich Museum and its themes
The Einrich Museum in Katzenelnbogen is a regional local history museum housed in a farmstead dating from the 18th century. Its sections cover local history, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, crafts, mining, agriculture, rural work, and domestic culture. Local history and different aspects of work and daily life therefore offer complementary ways to explore the museum. Visitors interested in regional history can explore several subject areas rather than focusing on a single craft or period. Special demonstrations may include a print shop and a village smithy. These depend on the occasion, so they should not be expected as a regular part of every visit.
Planning your visit
Guided visits are available year-round by prior arrangement. Regular opening hours without advance booking are from 2 to 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month, from March through November. Arrange your visit in advance if you would like a guided tour; for a visit during regular opening hours, use this monthly time slot. Since visiting arrangements may change, check the details before your visit.
Historic walks in Katzenelnbogen
The local heritage association has developed three historic walks, starting from the Einrich Museum car park at Weiherwiese. A municipal article dated February 8, 2026, describes one of the routes through Untertal, Obertal, and Römerberg. Its stops include St. Catherine’s Church, the Upper Gate, the old market square, the path to the castle, and a house dating from 1604. The route connects different parts of the town with individual buildings and a structure whose year of construction is specifically given. Confirm that the tours are available before making plans.
Rhein-Lahn: more perspectives on hiking and history
The wider Rhein-Lahn destination offers a range of hikes around Aar and Einrich, including guided hikes, themed and educational trails, pilgrim routes, and circular and point-to-point hikes. There are also mushroom and wild herb walks, as well as routes along the water. Unlike the specific Katzenelnbogen walks, which name particular parts of the town, the regional offering also includes themed and nature-focused formats. Individual routes and programs may change.
Another historical connection in the wider Rhein-Lahn destination is the Roman Limes: it runs through the Rhein-Lahn district, and its visible remains are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper German-Raetian Limes. Alongside Katzenelnbogen’s local and museum themes, this provides a distinct regional connection to Roman history.
