Spesenroth lies on the watershed between the Moselle and Nahe catchment areas. At an altitude of around 460 metres, its elevated position offers far-reaching views across the landscape. The village has a rural, peaceful character.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The Burgstadt Trail leads to the Seerosenteich pond and offers a viewpoint with far-reaching views across the HunsrĂĽck towards the Soonwald. It is described as a family outing or a Sunday afternoon stroll. A woodland meadow along the way is a good spot for a picnic; the route ends at the Kyrill storm-damage adventure trail. This combines scenic views with a stop focusing on storm damage in the forest. The Burgstadt Trail can be reached by public transport via the BahnhofstraĂźe stop in Kastellaun. Check the timetable before you travel.

Cyclists in the Kastellaun area can choose from routes including the 38-kilometre Schinderhannes Cycle Path and the 30-kilometre HunsrĂĽck-Moselle Cycle Path. The latter runs from Kastellaun towards Treis-Karden, mostly across fields, through forests and along quiet roads. For the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the HunsrĂĽck-Moselle RadBus, supports tours on the Schinderhannes Cycle Path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable before planning your cycling tour.

Culture in Kastellaun

Kastellaun Castle was first mentioned in official records in the early 13th century and is used for cultural events. The programme may vary. Along Spesenrother Weg in Kastellaun, Stolpersteine memorial stones commemorate the victims; QR codes provide further information about them.

The House of Regional History in Kastellaun explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Thematic exhibitions, information panels and original documents bring the different periods to life for museum visitors. From 25 April 2026, the opening hours are as follows: Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

The Wider Destination: Rhein-HunsrĂĽck

The wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination encompasses large parts of the Hunsrück, which belongs to the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It includes parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised in 2002.

There are numerous hiking trails in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. One longer-distance route is the Saar-Hunsrück Trail: it runs across the Hunsrück through Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers 410 kilometres over 27 stages. Around the Geierlay Bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg, several circular routes are described, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres; they start and finish at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. This means there are shorter routes with specific stages to choose from as well as longer trails.

Cycling routes are also part of the regional offering: extensive, well-developed and signposted routes run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. Regional culinary highlights include local specialities and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards. With a range of hiking and cycling options, you can tailor your stay to the landscape, culture and tour length you prefer.
