Horn offers several distinct themes to explore: protected architectural and local history, literature and sculpture, as well as opportunities for hiking and cycling. You can shape your trip around whichever of these specific attractions appeals to you most. For orientation, Horn lies between the regional centres of Simmern and Kastellaun.
Baroque Church and Horner Castle
The Protestant church in Horn is a protected Baroque hall church dating from 1781/82. The protected ensemble also includes the cemetery wall and cemetery. The term “hall church” describes its architectural form; its classification as a Baroque church and its date provide a specific point of reference for anyone wishing to make historic architecture the focus of their stay.
South of Horn lies the protected Horner Castle, a ringwork fortification dating from the 10th or 11th century. This brings two different historical landmarks into view: the church from the late 18th century and a much older fortification built for defence. Horner Castle is also a stop on the “Romans, Knights, Nuns” themed route.
Literature, Sculpture and Digital Perspectives
Wilhelm Philip Oertel, known as W. O. von Horn, was born in Horn in 1798 and wrote novels and short stories. Anyone interested in literary history can discover a specific connection between the place and the writer’s life, without associating his name with a particular work or local institution.
Rehberg Gallery also gives Horn its own artistic theme. After 37 years of exhibiting in Mainz, it moved to Horn and focuses on sculptures that combine visual and tactile qualities. The works are presented in a large old garden, making the outdoor setting part of the art experience described. The exhibition programme includes four exhibitions a year. Visits must be arranged in advance by email or telephone; plan your visit accordingly and check the current visiting conditions.
The ARGO app offers another way to view historic monuments: in Horn, it lets you see them from all sides in their reconstructed original form. Before travelling, check whether the digital application is available.
Events and Trails
The Horn Art Festival takes place every year in early September at the community centre. It is an all-day interdisciplinary festival featuring dance, literature, music and visual art. If you plan to visit around the festival, check that year’s programme. The International Folk Hike, held annually, is also one of the main events organised by TuS Horn; its date should likewise be confirmed separately.
Horn’s barbecue hut can be rented from April to October. If you would like to include this seasonal option in your plans, check the current booking conditions. This keeps information about the rental period separate from the question of whether a specific date is available.
The “Romans, Knights, Nuns” themed route leads to Horn along woodland and meadow paths. Horner Castle is a stop on the route where visitors can explore and rest. As a themed cycling route, it is considered usable year-round; seasonal conditions may nevertheless affect the ride. Check the route conditions before setting out. Those interested in culture can enjoy a different kind of visit from travellers who want to focus their time on a cycling route and its stops.
