Rheinfels Castle, hiking trails and historical exhibitions offer different ways to spend time in Sankt Goar. You can plan a hike, explore the castle’s history, or combine both with regional cuisine and wine. Several time estimates are available to help you plan your routes; the trails also differ in character.

Rheinfels Castle: History and Insights

Count Diether of Katzenelnbogen had Rheinfels Castle built in Sankt Goar in 1245. The castle is considered one of the largest castle and fortress ruins in Europe. Exhibitions at the castle museum present the history of the fortress and the history of Sankt Goar. Ferdinand Freiligrath, as well as the themes of Romanticism and revolution, are also represented.

The castle cinema offers a virtual tour of the castle grounds. The mine tunnels, by contrast, can only be visited as part of a guided castle tour. Restrictions may apply seasonally to protect bats; check the conditions before your visit. Rheinfels is also connected with the history of democracy: the Sankt Goar Circle met there in 1948.

An evening tour of Rheinfels Castle can offer another highlight: visitors can sample wines from Sankt Goar’s vineyards. Local cuisine includes tarte flambée, brown trout and game from the surrounding forests. The town is also part of the landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, characterized by castles, historic places, vineyards and a striking natural setting.

Hiking: Short Walks and Longer Stages

Certified hiking trails in Sankt Goar include the Rheinsteig and RheinBurgenweg; there are also easy circular trails on a Traumschleifchen. The tourist information office provides free hiking maps for short walks starting in Sankt Goar. Ask about map availability before your trip and check trail conditions before setting out.

The estimated walking times can help you choose a suitable hike. The Panorama Trail from Sankt Goar takes approximately two hours and 45 minutes. The tenth stage of the RheinBurgenweg between Sankt Goar and Oberwesel takes about three hours. The Erzweg between Sankt Goar and Hirzenach is listed as a four-hour route. These times are for planning purposes and may vary depending on conditions: the Panorama Trail and the RheinBurgenweg stage are similar in duration, while the Erzweg calls for a longer hiking window.

The RheinBurgenweg stage from St. Goar to Bad Salzig features an impressive castle, quiet valleys, challenging trail sections and wide-ranging views. The RheinBurgenweg also reaches the Pilz viewpoint before the Alpinpfad runs along a steep slope. The described routes therefore include both quieter stretches through the landscape and challenging sections of trail.

Getting Around Locally

The access route meets the RheinBurgenweg at the edge of Reusche Park and continues through the park to Rheinfels Castle. A wooden bridge leads to the castle. Bus routes 681, 682 and 683 run from Sankt Goar to Rheinfels Castle; check the current timetable before travelling. There is an e-bike charging station in front of the town hall. Check in advance whether it is available.

When planning your stay, you can consider the castle and museum alongside the hiking times: a short circuit and a route lasting several hours require different time windows. If you want to visit the mine tunnels, also bear in mind that access is limited to a guided castle tour and that seasonal restrictions may apply. This lets you tailor your day to your preferred focus without trying to fit culture and hiking into a single packed itinerary.
