Emmelshausen combines a hiking route along the HunsrĂĽck Railway with museums dedicated to railways and agriculture. It also offers the spa gardens and events at the Zentrum am Park. The range spans landscapes and railways, regional history and stage performances.
Hiking between the railway line and the gorge
The HunsrĂĽck Railway hiking trail starts at Emmelshausen station and follows the railway towards Boppard. Along the way are gorges, tunnels and viaducts; designated viewpoints include LiesenfeldhĂĽtte and Hubertusschlucht. The route thus combines railway scenery with changing landscapes.
Another hiking destination in Emmelshausen is the iron-rich Heilbrünnchen spring. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands right beside it. For a hike through Ehrbachtal and Ehrbachklamm, even inexperienced hikers can manage the route with suitable footwear. Ehrbachklamm is a regional excursion destination connected to the Emmelshausen hiking trail; its romantically rugged streams are among the gorge’s distinctive features.
Museums and events
The HunsrĂĽck Railway Museum Emmelshausen presents its permanent exhibition in the former goods shed and signal box. Exhibits include railway artifacts, a model railway and an extensive photo exhibition. Anyone interested in the history of the railway will find several different ways to explore the subject here: objects, a model and photographic views.
The Emmelshausen Agricultural History Museum focuses on agricultural hand tools from the Stone Age to the present day. It also explains how agriculture developed before the age of machinery. In this way, it complements the history of the railway with a different perspective on work and change in the region.
The Zentrum am Park offers cabaret, comedy, musicals, theatre, classical music and children’s programming. If you would like to plan an event into your visit, check the latest listings. The spa gardens offer a different kind of attraction: this green oasis lies right in the heart of Emmelshausen, and its beer garden invites visitors to linger.
Getting here and cycling routes
You can reach Emmelshausen from Boppard by HunsrĂĽck Railway. Bus routes 615, 620, 625 and 675 run to Emmelshausen from Simmern, Kastellaun and Koblenz. Check the timetables before travelling to make sure the connections fit your plans.
The town is also named on cycling routes: the HunsrĂĽck-Mosel Tour reaches Emmelshausen via the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route. This should be distinguished from the route information for the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, route 629: during the 2026 season, it supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Timetables may differ in later seasons; check before planning your trip.
Hiking and scenic areas in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district
The Rhein-Hunsrück district includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. These include much of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site, which was designated in 2002.
The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality has an extensive network of certified premium trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. Another regional destination is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Circular trails of between three and 14 kilometres run around the bridge, starting and ending at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay dream trail is 6.6 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. Check current route conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
Cycling routes also shape the wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district: there are extensive, well-developed and signposted routes along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck.
