Hiking and History in Dillendorf

The historic Ausonius Road runs through the municipality of Dillendorf and is designated as a hiking trail. A group of Celtic burial mounds associated with the area around Dillendorf is located in the nearby Brauschieder State Forest. This brings together two specific themes: a designated hiking route in the municipality and archaeological traces in the nearby forest. This gives the area a clear profile centred on hiking and regional history.

The Ausonius Road is a specific point of reference if you are looking for a stay with a focus on hiking. The burial mounds add an archaeological perspective to this historical setting. Together, they give you different points of reference to help you decide which themes should take priority when choosing your destination.

The Wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck Destination

The wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination encompasses a broader landscape: the Rhein-Hunsrück district includes large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. It also includes large parts of the Hunsrück Plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. This regional context can help you weigh up the Hunsrück landscape and the Middle Rhine Valley as distinct scenic highlights.

Hiking Routes in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck District

The Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. If you are planning to hike this trail, check its current route and certification before setting out. The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig crosses the HunsrĂĽck, passing through Kastellaun and continuing to the Rhine at Boppard. It is 410 kilometres long in total and comprises 27 stages. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by different details: certification is the main feature of the Soonwaldsteig, while the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig is notable for its length and number of stages.

Another hiking option in the wider destination is the area around the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. The bridge is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular routes there are between 3 and 14 kilometres long, with both the start and finish at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and is rated as moderately difficult. These route lengths give you concrete points of comparison when choosing a hike. Check the current route and conditions before setting out.

Culture in the Wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck Destination

The Museum of Regional History in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. The museum’s exhibits, information panels and original documents provide the setting. This offers a cultural history focus in the Rhein-Hunsrück region alongside its hiking options. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.
