Richert and Puderbacher Land

Richert is a district of Puderbach. A large part of the municipality lies within the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. This gives you a clear local focus for planning your trip, as well as a choice of destinations in the municipality and across the wider Puderbacher Land area. The themes range from castle ruins and castle routes to nature experiences and circular walks or cycling tours. Route details vary according to distance, destination and starting point; these details provide a basis for choosing activities for your stay.

Reichenstein Castle Ruins and Castle Routes

Reichenstein Castle Ruins is one of the historic attractions in the municipality of Puderbach. It was probably built around 1310 by Ludwig III of Reichenstein, who established his ancestral seat there. A route description from 2018 describes Castle Route 1 from Richert, following a meadow path gently downhill to the ruins. Castle tours and visits can be arranged by phone through the Puderbacher Land Tourist Information Office at 02684 / 858-160; confirm your appointment before travelling.

The castle routes are designed as circular routes, so you can generally join them at any point. Castle Route 2 runs through the Werlenbach Valley to the DĂĽrrholz Nature Trail; its stated length is about 17.6 kilometres. The nature trail offers information about the forest, its animals and plants, as well as hunting and forestry. On Castle Route 3, you can observe Heck cattle in a landscape away from traffic. So distance is not the only factor when choosing a route: Castle Route 2 leads to the nature trail, while Castle Route 3 offers the chance to observe Heck cattle.

On 27 July 2014, a revised flyer was presented to mark the tenth anniversary of the DĂĽrrholz Nature Trail. At the time, the trail was described as about 3.5 kilometres long, with 54 stations. These figures refer to the description at that time.

Cycling Routes and Getting There

The “Rund um Puderbach” cycle route is 16 kilometres long and starts and ends at the community centre in Puderbach on Barentoner Straße. The “Puderbacher Land” cycle route is a 45-kilometre circular route through the Westerwald. Any point along this route can serve as its starting and finishing point. This lets you compare a shorter loop with a fixed start and finish in Puderbach with a longer circular route whose start and finish you can choose freely. The “Puderbacher Land” cycle route crosses the heights of the Niederwesterwald and passes through the region’s stream valleys. Parts of it run along paved sections, and it frequently follows unpaved and gravelled farm and forest tracks.

For bus planning, there is a dated reference point: The VRM timetable for route 102, valid from 10 December 2023, listed “Richert Abzweigung” between “Reichenstein Burg” and “Puderbach Verbandsgemeinde”. Please check the current timetable for your specific journey.
