The Roentgen Museum Neuwied houses a collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks that is unique in the world. It offers an insight into 18th-century furniture making: Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David Roentgen (1743–1807) were the most important furniture makers of their time. With their then highly modern luxury furniture, known as “Neuwied furniture,” they supplied European royal courts from Paris to Saint Petersburg. The collection and its history show why the name Neuwied is also associated with a furniture-making tradition of significance beyond the region.
Culture between Gallery, Castle and Abbey
The STADTGALERIE Mennonitenkirche is located right by the dyke, in the heart of Neuwied city centre. It occupies the former rooms of a Mennonite church built in 1768. Both the current exhibition venue and the building’s former use give the gallery a distinctive architectural connection.
The regionally renowned Schlosstheater is located in an annex of Neuwied Castle. It serves as a regular performance venue for the Rhineland-Palatinate State Theatre. Alongside visits to museums and exhibitions, theatre performances offer another distinct cultural highlight.
Rommersdorf Abbey, a former Premonstratensian abbey, is now a venue for theatre performances, concerts and readings. Events are held in locations including the English Garden, the cloister and the abbey church. As a cultural heritage site, the abbey is particularly appealing to those interested in history, gardens and architecture. It is open to visitors every year from Easter until the beginning of November, on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Information on its history and art history, as well as guided tours led by experienced Rommersdorf experts, is available free of charge. As visiting hours are seasonal, check them before your trip.
Archaeology and an important travel note
MONREPOS in Neuwied is an archaeological research centre and museum dedicated to human behavioural evolution. One specific travel restriction is important: MONREPOS cannot be reached directly by public transport. The nearest bus stop, “Waldesruh,” is in the Segendorf district; from there, a walk of several kilometres remains to reach the destination. If you plan to visit MONREPOS, check your travel options before setting out. The exhibition and the journey there are two separate aspects to consider when planning.
Zoo, Rhine and routes through Neuwied
Neuwied Zoo is the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its offerings include children’s birthday parties, evening tours, wildlife photography workshops and programmes for school classes. The range of options makes the zoo interesting for different occasions, without implying a general promise for any particular type of visitor.
There are also several options for outdoor activities: the natural areas along the Rhine and in the first foothills of the Westerwald near Neuwied are particularly well suited to hiking and cycling. Part of the Limes Cycle Route runs through the city of Neuwied. This makes it possible to consider a specific cycle route as a distinct highlight alongside the hiking and cycling opportunities in nature.
The Dyke Information Centre and 22 discovery stations introduce the Neuwied dyke system as a landmark, along with the city’s many features, both large and small, for residents and visitors. Those interested in the city and its dyke system will find a different perspective here than in the museums or on the trails. The Neuwied Tourist Information Office advises visitors on sights, museums and exhibitions, sells tickets for local events and provides information about city tours.
