The Glan flows through Offenbach-Hundheim; medieval churches and routes for cycling and hiking add history and activity to the picture. The village lies on the valley slopes of the North-West Palatinate Uplands. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture and activity separately—or combine the two.

Landscape and geological features

The Glan runs through Offenbach-Hundheim and flows into the Nahe near Odernheim. Federal Highway 420 also passes through the village. The river, valley slopes and road offer different points of reference for understanding the character of the area. A local geological feature is the Fri-Fra-Loch, formed by honeycomb weathering in Rotliegend sandstone. The technical term describes the honeycomb-like shaping of the rock surface. This means the feature can be understood not only as a local landmark, but also in terms of the process that created this rock formation.

Churches and architectural history

The Hirsau Church was the medieval parish church of the Essweiler Valley and is considered one of the most impressive village churches in the Palatinate. The abbey church is considered one of the region’s most significant sacred buildings and an outstanding example of the transition from late Rhenish Romanesque to Early Gothic. It is a three-aisled pillar basilica with a distinctive octagonal crossing tower. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles; the crossing tower stands at the intersection of the nave and transept.

Construction of the former priory church of St. Mary began in 1215 under Benedictine monks and was completed in the 14th century. The abbey church is used for services and concerts and can be visited as part of guided tours. Check current tour and event options before your visit.

By rail-bike, bicycle or on foot

A disused railway line is used for rail-bike rides; a footpath and cycle path run alongside it through the village. In the Glan Valley, rail-bike rides follow a former railway line, with opportunities to stop at inns and picnic spots. This offers two different ways to experience the former railway line: riding a rail-bike, or taking the parallel route on foot or by bicycle. Operations are seasonal; check in advance whether the tours and local stopping places suit your travel dates.

The Glan-Blies Cycle Route is considered family-friendly, varied and well signposted. Sections along former railway lines involve relatively few climbs. Around Offenbach-Hundheim, hiking options range from challenging tours to family-friendly routes and easy walks. When hiking, you can choose between different levels of difficulty; for cycling, signposting and the condition of the route sections are useful points of reference.

For a break, the Ernst-Reichel-HĂĽtte has 50 indoor seats, outdoor seating available as needed, toilets and a covered barbecue hut. Check the information about these facilities before your trip.
