Föckelberg offers two different ways to enjoy a stay on the Potzberg: Potzberg Wildlife Park, with its falconry and animal life, and a landscape and local history reflected in the northwestern slope and historic mercury mining. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide what interests you most: is a visit to the park your main priority, are you interested in the Potzberg summit and its views, or would you like to learn more about the area's mining history? This makes it easier to plan your stay around the subject that matters most to you.

Potzberg Wildlife Park: Animals and Flight Displays

The main attraction at Potzberg Wildlife Park is its falconry. Free-flight displays feature eagles, vultures, falcons, kites and buzzards. The park is also home to numerous animal species, including red deer, wild boar, moose, reindeer, bison, ibex, Arctic foxes, raccoons, Andean condors, eagles, falcons, owls and bearded vultures. A visit to the park therefore has two highlights: the birds of prey displays and the variety of other animal species.

There is also a special winter programme. Programme times and seasonal offerings may change, so check the latest information before your visit. You can also rent carts at the wildlife park for families with children. If this option is important to your plans, check availability and rental conditions in advance.

Potzberg: Hillside Setting, Views and Mining History

Föckelberg lies on the northwestern slope of the Potzberg. From there, you can enjoy views across the hilly landscape east of the village. The Potzberg summit and observation tower are about 1 km away as the crow flies and around 2 km by road. These figures refer to different types of distance and help put the village's location in relation to the summit into perspective.

Mercury mining is also part of Föckelberg's history. In the second half of the 18th century, numerous mercury mines opened around the Potzberg summit, attracting miners to the village. The mines are a historical link to the village's development, while the hillside landscape and views to the east offer a different perspective on Föckelberg.

Getting Here and Finding Your Way Around the Region

Föckelberg is connected by the K 34. The K 35 runs from the northern end of the village to the Potzberg summit. The A 62 motorway exits at Kusel and Glan-Münchweiler are each about 10 km away. Altenglan is the nearest railway station, around 6 km away. For your specific journey, check current navigation and traffic information or timetables.

As an additional cultural attraction in the wider destination of Kusel, there is Lichtenberg Castle. The castle is 425 metres long, ranks among Germany's longest castle ruins and is the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. Inside, you will find the Palatinate Musicians' Museum and the Geoskop. This cultural highlight in the Kusel destination complements Föckelberg's landscape and historical themes.
