Homberg lies in a high-lying hollow in the hilly North Palatinate Uplands, surrounded on all sides by meadows and forests. To the east, the hollow opens into the Grumbach Valley; from nearby Schönborner Hof, the view stretches far across the Palatinate Uplands. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh whether the rural setting, the Kerb fair or Pitzburg is the main reason for your stay.
Getting Your Bearings: Location and Travel
Homberg is reached via the L 373 state road. The B 270 is about 1.5 kilometres away, and the B 420 around four kilometres. The nearest motorway junction, near Kusel, is approximately 20 kilometres away; Lauterecken railway station is about seven kilometres away. These distances provide a general guide to the road and rail connections. Check current route conditions for your specific journey and the relevant service for your train trip.
The Kerb Fair and Pitzburg: Different Timeframes
The Homberg Kerb fair takes place every year on the last weekend in July. If you would like to plan your stay around the village festival, check the specific event dates in advance, as individual arrangements may change.
Above Homberg, Pitzburg is a rentable barbecue hut in a woodland setting with a view. The indoor area has seating for about 60 to 70 people and a kitchen; there is also a large barbecue area and a children’s playground. The playground is a separate feature, while the seating and kitchen describe the indoor facilities and the barbecue area is another part of the amenities. Rental by prior arrangement is possible from 1 May to 31 October. As the season and arrangements may change, it is best to confirm your preferred date in advance.
The Kerb fair and Pitzburg offer different timeframes to plan around: the festival falls on a particular weekend in July, while the hut can be rented during a longer but limited season. If either offer is important to your trip, plan your travel dates around the relevant event date or rental period.
Kusel: More Things to Explore in the Wider Destination
The wider Kusel destination offers further cultural and nature attractions, including Lichtenberg Castle, the Veldenz Hiking Trail and the Königsberg limestone mine. Lichtenberg Castle is 425 metres long, is one of the longest castle ruins in Germany and is the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. Inside are the Palatinate Musicians’ Museum and the Geoskop.
The Veldenz Hiking Trail, around 60 kilometres long, has been awarded the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” designation, passes through two nature reserves and can be divided into five stages. It begins at Lichtenberg Castle above Thallichtenberg and ends in the Veldenz town of Lauterecken. Its length and award status may be updated; check the information with the trail operator before planning your stages.
The Königsberg limestone mine in Wolfstein offers a different focus: this significant industrial heritage site lies 50 metres underground. Guided visitor groups travel through a long, winding tunnel on a mine railway. Among the unusual rock formations, there is also a wine tour with information about wine, grape varieties and the hard work of miners underground.
