Three rooms at the Kusel Town and Local History Museum are devoted to the life and work of Fritz Wunderlich. Photographs, costumes, and written, visual and audio material complement this focus. The museum also covers the history of Kusel and hosts changing exhibitions. Its themes therefore range from one person to the town’s history and exhibitions whose subjects vary. When planning your trip, you can choose whether to focus mainly on Fritz Wunderlich, Kusel’s history or the changing exhibition themes.
Museum and Historic Buildings
The museum is housed in the former Michaelis pharmacy building. The three-storey Neoclassical building was constructed a few years after the 1794 fire. Its architectural history is therefore also part of the museum’s historical setting. The Provost Church of St. Remigius offers a different view of the past: it is the only surviving building of the former St. Remigius provostry.
Lichtenberg Castle is on a different scale: the complex is 425 metres long and is considered the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. It is also described as accessible and open year-round. Inside are the Palatinate Musicians Museum and the Geoskop. Alongside the themes of the Town and Local History Museum, these two museums are also distinct cultural highlights to choose from.
Trails, Ruins and Excursions
The Fritz-Wunderlich Trail reaches Kusel via Rammelsbach and then follows a former railway line towards Freisen. It runs along a quiet, nature-focused route with two high viaducts and two tunnels. There are no crossings with other routes between Kusel and Pfeffelbach; this section is considered suitable for families looking for a nature-focused outing. Check the route information before setting out.
The ruins of Michelsburg and the Mithras Monument are open year-round and free of charge; neither site has winter maintenance. The Mithras Monument is about 100 metres from the Fritz-Wunderlich cycling and hiking route between Kusel and Freisen. If you are planning a winter visit, take the lack of winter maintenance at both sites into account.
A draisine ride through the Palatinate Uplands is another activity. Route tips cover sights and places to eat along the way. Operating and booking conditions may change; check them if you are planning a ride.
In the broader Kusel destination
The Veldenz Hiking Trail passes through two nature reserves and can be divided into five stages. It is around 60 kilometres long and, as a certified quality hiking trail, bears the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” designation. The route starts at Lichtenberg Castle above Thallichtenberg and ends in the town of Lauterecken in the Veldenz region. The length and designation may be updated by the route operator; check the current route description before planning.
The broader Kusel destination also includes the limestone mine at Königsberg in Wolfstein, an important industrial monument 50 metres underground. Guided visitor groups travel by mine railway through a long, winding tunnel with brick-lined vaults and passages carved into the rock. Among the unusual rock formations, visitors can also enjoy a wine tour featuring select wines, along with information about wine, grape varieties and the hard work of miners underground.
