Orsfeld combines a focus on cultural history with a specifically named mountain bike route. The branch church of St. Peter and several wayside crosses represent different periods of construction and origin; the “Ginaff Kyll Orsfeld” route follows the town’s roads. This makes it possible to experience Orsfeld through both its historical details and its cycling options.

St. Peter’s Church and its layers of history

The Catholic branch church of St. Peter is a sight in Orsfeld. The present building is a hall church dating from 1781; the west tower is probably medieval. It is the oldest surviving part of the present church and comes from the medieval Orsfeld chapel, of which it is the only surviving remnant. The church building thus brings together the 1781 hall church and the older tower.

A late Gothic sacrament niche bearing the date 1487 is located in the northeast wall of the chancel. Together with the tower’s history, it offers a closer look at various historical traces at a single site. Those interested in architecture will find several clearly distinguishable details here, rather than just one construction date.

Wayside crosses in Orsfeld

The wayside crosses also differ in design, location and date. The niche cross in Orsfeld is unornamented and has a narrow, chamfered shaft. The finial cross sits directly on the niche roof, without a stem; it probably dates from the 16th or early 17th century. The old court cross at the Orsfeld water house is also a niche cross, but it is late Gothic and probably dates from 1415.

Another niche cross on the road to Seinsfeld is located about 150 metres south of the junction with the Kyllburg–Oberkail road. This approximate indication helps pinpoint its location. At Kyllburger Straße 2, the shaft of a wayside cross leans against the barn of a farmstead; the upper part of the cross is missing. A stonemason’s mark below the inscription assigns the shaft to the group of Kyllburg crosses from the early 17th century. The differences between the crosses show that there is more to see in Orsfeld than just the church.

More places to explore in the Bitburg-Prüm district

The wider travel destination of the Bitburg-Prüm district offers further, distinct attractions for broader trip planning. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf Visitor Mine has a mining trail with numerous information panels on the area’s mining history. One-hour tours of the tunnels explain ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. If you are planning a tour, check the current seasonal opening information.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in a playful way. The Westwall Museum offers a different focus: it is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker and features a military history exhibition in underground corridors and rooms. In the Bitburger Land, the landscape is shaped by sun-drenched plateaus, deeply incised river valleys and light-filled forests.

The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving refined regional cuisine; check whether it is open before your trip. These regional examples differ markedly from the church and cross details in Orsfeld and offer their own cultural, landscape or mining-history focus.
