Steinborn can be explored through two closely connected themes: its location in the Kyllburg Forest Eifel and its protected village center, whose appearance preserves the character of a rural village around 1850. The village lies on the eastern high terrace of the Kyll; its average elevation is 480 meters. Historic farmsteads, religious buildings and named elevations give the village description cultural and landscape highlights. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether village history or elevation is more closely aligned with your interests.

Elevation and Landscape

The other elevation figures refer to individual heights, not the village average. The Held rises to almost 530 meters west of Steinborn. The Eischberge in the Steinborn Forest reach up to 570 meters; the 547-meter-high Witumsberg is also associated with Steinborn. This comparison illustrates the difference between the village's average elevation and individual high points. The landscape perspective thus complements the architectural history of the village center with a second way of understanding the village's character.

The Protected Village Center

The historic village center is protected as a monument zone; its appearance preserves the image of a rural village around 1850. The surviving farmsteads date from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century. The reference to around 1850 describes the character of the village center, while the farmsteads span several decades. This makes the village structure itself a cultural history topic and complements the focus on individual chapels and crosses.

Church, Chapels and Historical Dates

The buildings include the branch church of St. Hubert, a hall church dating from 1820 with an added sacristy. The portal bears the date 1747 and was probably reused. South of the village, on the ridge along Lehmweg, stands Markus Chapel, which probably dates from the 18th century. The Helten Cross stands on the Held: a 2.60-meter-high niche cross, probably created in the 15th century.

In 1654, Steinborn had three chapels dedicated to Saint Hubert, Saint Lucia and John the Baptist. In the 1930s, Anna Esch built the Lourdes Marian Grotto beside Steinborn's church. These details add to the different historical periods represented in the village's history.

Regional Cultural Attractions

The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm offers other distinctive cultural attractions. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in paleontology and fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed across three accessible levels of a bunker and features a military history exhibition in underground passages and rooms. Both museums offer historical perspectives different from those of Steinborn's village center and religious buildings.
