Oberweis lies on the Prüm, at the site of an old ford. It was an important crossing point between Trier and Bitburg, as well as between Neuerburg and Vianden. The village thus combines a historic river crossing with archaeological traces and a network of hiking trails.

Roman Traces and Local History

Excavations in Oberweis uncovered a Roman estate complex. It included a 124-metre-long portico villa with well-preserved wall paintings and mosaic floors. Hiking Trail No. 73 passes the former site of the Roman Villa, making a direct connection with the village’s Roman history.

Hiking Trails and Nature

Oberweis has around 45 kilometres of signposted hiking and walking trails, some of which are maintained in partnership with the South Eifel Nature Park. One option is South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 75: this moderately difficult circular hike is 9.8 kilometres long and starts and ends on Bitburger Straße in Oberweis. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as route details may change.

Hiking Trail No. 75 offers panoramic views across the Prüm Valley; wild orchids may be seen in spring and summer. The trail also passes wayside crosses dating from four centuries and brings together natural, cultural and local history.

The Oberweis Crosses Trail offers another highlight, with twelve stops and numbered information boards; it is about 14 kilometres long. The differences can help you choose: No. 75 is a moderately difficult 9.8-kilometre circular hike, while the Crosses Trail is longer, at around 14 kilometres, and its stops and boards provide points of orientation. The Oberweis area is also home to the “Mergelhänge mit Orchideen” nature monument.
