Dudeldorf combines architectural history with several routes that differ in their starting points and destinations. When planning your stay, you can focus on the old town and city gates, the Gelöbnis Tour, or hiking and cycling. Dudeldorf is on the B 50 between Bitburg and Wittlich, around ten kilometers east of Bitburg.
City Gates and Historic Houses
A historical walking tour runs between the medieval city gates. Dudeldorf’s fortifications date from after 1345. North of the Upper Gate, surviving sections form a cemetery wall and enclose the castle grounds. The Upper Gate is a gate tower with ashlar facing, built in 1453. The Lower Gate is a plastered gatehouse whose passageway was altered around 1840.
The old town’s historic-preservation area includes long rows of craftsmen’s houses and houses belonging to farming townspeople. Features include stepped gables, open staircases, front courtyards and wells. The house at Hauptstraße 23 has a stepped gable, partial half-timbering and dates from around 1700. Hauptstraße 20 is a house with a central hallway and kitchen, probably dating from around or shortly after 1600; its barn is dated 1729. The building “Zum alten Brauhaus” at Herrengasse 2 is a three-part, three-story ensemble. In front of Hauptstraße 17 stands a running fountain with a fountain column from 1859, a red sandstone trough and a putto in the Neo-Renaissance style.
The parish church of Maria Königin was built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1909 and contains older works of art, including a 14th-century sculpture of John the Baptist. Dudeldorf’s craft history also has a specific date: the town was a center of wool weaving in the former district of Bitburg; wool weavers are documented there in 1624.
Hiking and Cycling
The Pestflämmchen Trail begins at the old town wall in Dudeldorf Civic Park. The Gelöbnis Tour circles Dudeldorf, starts at Maria Königin, passes six chapels and numerous wayside crosses, and ends at St. Martin in Ordorf. It therefore offers a different route from the walk between the city gates: the Gelöbnis Tour has named stops and a destination in Ordorf, while the Pestflämmchen Trail starts in the civic park. Check the current trail signs for the hiking routes locally.
The 130-kilometer Kyll Valley Cycle Path is considered easily accessible from Dudeldorf. Check current route conditions before setting out. The surrounding landscape also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. Alongside the town’s architectural landmarks, visitors can choose from a range of activities, from a historical walking tour to longer cycling routes.
Dudeldorf Castle and Civic Park
Dudeldorf Castle combines a medieval residential tower with an 18th-century manor house with two wings. There is also a courtyard with an arched gateway and a garden with a pavilion. The municipal part of the castle is used for exhibitions, club activities, a wedding room and other events; the courtyard and outbuildings host cultural events. If you plan to attend a specific event, check current access information in advance.
In 2017, plans were approved to redesign the former cemetery as Dudeldorf Civic Park. The park was planned as a learning space for all generations; its goals included creating a community gathering place and enhancing the area for tourism. This planning background complements the park’s practical role as the starting point of the Pestflämmchen Trail.
