Halsdorf lies on a high plateau between the Enz and Prüm rivers. Architectural evidence from several centuries and the Kleine Wacholderrunde offer two different ways to explore the area: the history of its farmsteads and buildings, and the landscape along the Enz valley. You can choose which one shapes your stay based on your interests.

Landscape and the Kleine Wacholderrunde

The Bitburger LandGang – Kleine Wacholderrunde starts in Halsdorf on Schulstraße, by the community hall. As starting points and access arrangements may change, check them locally before travelling.

The route follows the edge of a forest and offers views of the fields and meadows of the Enz valley. Remnants of former juniper hedges remain along the way; landscape features like these can change. A bench offers a chance to enjoy a picnic with panoramic views over the Enz valley. Check the condition of the bench on site. In this way, the route description combines open views of the valley with traces of the former hedgerow landscape.

Visitors to the Heck distillery in Halsdorf are offered home-distilled fruit brandy. Check before your visit whether it is currently available. A guided tour of the Norbert Heck distillery explains how Eifel schnapps and brandies are made. The tasting includes ten different brandies and liqueurs, as well as savoury snacks and mineral water. Before travelling, confirm whether the tour and its stated offerings are currently available.

Historic townscapes

The earliest recorded form of Halsdorf’s name is Haltzdorf, dating from 1501. The buildings also provide specific points of reference in time. The listed branch church of St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier is a hall church; its roof turret is dated to 1778.

Two listed farmsteads date from 1786: the single-roof farmhouse at Hauptstraße 13 has a stable wing with haylofts and a cellar built into the slope. The linear farmstead at Schulstraße 4 was later extended. The two farmsteads share the same construction year; their names and recorded architectural details distinguish them.

The former schoolmaster’s house at Hohlweg 4 dates from 1852 and has a striking façade. North of Halsdorf, towards Olsdorf, there is also a wayside cross with a relief-decorated shaft, dated to 1777. The dates thus span the wayside cross, the church and the two farmsteads, through to the former schoolmaster’s house, providing a historical timeline for this selection of buildings.

More themes in the wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm

The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers other distinct cultural and visitor attractions. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine offers one-hour guided tours, where visitors learn about ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Check the seasonal visitor information before planning your visit.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in a playful way. The Westwall Museum focuses on a different subject: it is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker, and its underground passageways and rooms contain a military history exhibition.

The Rittersdorf water castle, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle also houses a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine; check whether it is operating before visiting. Mining and geology, fossils, military history, and castle and residential culture thus offer clearly distinct themes.
