If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lohnsfeld, you can also include the wider Donnersberg District destination when planning regional excursions. There, hiking routes and woodland landscapes sit alongside archaeological traces, mining history, lake experiences and wine. The destinations offer different highlights—from walking routes to insights into regional history.

Hiking between the Donnersberg and the castle ruins

At 687 metres, the Donnersberg is the highest elevation in the Palatinate and a popular hiking destination. The area covers around 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested and stretches diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometres. Two circular hiking trails provide a clear idea of the distances: the Ludwigsturm Trail is 6.7 kilometres long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels and leads to the Ludwigsturm. The Ruine Wildenstein circular trail is 7.9 kilometres long and leads to the ruins. The Ludwigsturm is a 26.9-metre-high stone tower with 142 steps; from the top, views extend across the North Palatinate Uplands, the Palatinate Forest, the Black Forest and the Vosges. The tower is currently closed for renovation work. For a longer hike, the Pfälzer Höhenweg starts in Winnweiler at the Donnersberg and runs in seven stages through the Palatinate Uplands to Wolfstein.

Celtic and medieval traces

Falkenstein Castle Ruins stand on a former volcanic vent and were first mentioned in a document in 1135. Their surroundings provide the setting for the annual Christmas market and the Falkenstein summer tours; check the specific event dates before visiting. The Celtic ring wall also brings the area’s earlier settlement to life: buried remains of a Celtic wall about 8.5 kilometres long enclosed a Celtic oppidum on the Donnersberg from around 130 to 60/50 BC. Another perspective is offered by the Celtic Village on the Donnersberg in Steinbach. This traditionally built farmstead settlement gives an impression of Celtic craft techniques used in house construction. Expert-led tours and changing hands-on activities are among the activities offered there. The Celtic Village is currently temporarily closed for renovation work.

Mining history in the mine and museum

At the Weiße Grube visitor mine, extensive tunnels reveal traces of 600 years of mining. These include medieval mining areas and later workings excavated using explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach complements this historical perspective with the region’s ores, rocks and fossil fuels. It also explains how iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver and mercury were extracted and processed. The mine and museum offer different points of focus: here, traces in the tunnel system; there, raw materials and their processing.

At the Eiswoog: lake, railway and cycle route

The Eiswoog is located in the Palatinate Forest–North Vosges Biosphere Reserve and is considered a year-round natural spectacle. Activities on site include boat trips, water treading, swimming and hikes around the lake with a nature trail. A paved, accessible path passes an observation platform overlooking the lake. The Eiswoog can be reached from Eisenberg by train, by bicycle through the forest or by car. The Stumpfwaldbahn is another regional option: its roughly four-kilometre narrow-gauge line uses converted former mining locomotives for journeys between Kleehof and the Eiswoog. Passengers can board at the Eiswoog, at Bockbachtal station near Kleehof or at Ramsen West. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable for your chosen date. Those travelling by bicycle will also find the Eiswoog as a stop along the Barbarossa Cycle Route. This route runs through the Palatinate from the Rhine at Worms via Kaiserslautern to Glan-Münchweiler near Kusel.

The Zellertal wine region and Weingut Bremer

The Zellertal is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in the Palatinate. There, you can enjoy regional wines and discover wine estates. In the wider Donnersberg District, Weingut Bremer offers wine tastings, a restaurant and an event venue at a historic winery. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the latest opening hours. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests: hiking and landscapes, archaeological and mining history, or regional wines.
