Some sections are considered moderate, while others are challenging.

The Nahesteig near Sonnenberg-Winnenberg

Above Sonnenberg, the Nahesteig runs toward Winnenberg. A forest path continues through the Eiserne Lay toward Sonnenberg-Winnenberg. The area is connected with former mining activity. In the broader Birkenfeld destination

Part of Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld municipal association, in the broader Birkenfeld destination. A nature-focused attraction is the 1-kilometer Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach, with four access points. It introduces the diversity of aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, including barbel and gudgeon, as well as waterbirds such as the kingfisher and white-throated dipper, and dragonfly species such as the common damselfly and river clubtail. The 1.6-kilometer National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier uses information boards to explain the rare and endangered arnica meadows, their origins, their preservation, and local biodiversity.

Culture can also be explored as part of the broader Birkenfeld destination: the Birkenfeld State Museum features permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs; the iron industry in Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg period. The Avenue of the Gods between Schwollen and Leisel is 2.5 kilometers long and features ten life-size, colorful figures of gods. Thus, the wider destination brings together nature education, regional history, and art as distinct themes.
