At the ruins of Frauenburg, the distinctive shield wall, keep and a smaller tower have survived; there are also remains of a chapel. The footpath from the car park to the castle is about 800 metres long. These are two different scales to consider when planning: the short walk to the ruins and a longer loop through the countryside.

Frauenburg and the Countess Loretta Loop

The Gräfin Loretta Dream Trail is a circular route of about 12.5 kilometres. It takes approximately three and a half hours to walk; the route is considered moderately difficult and includes some steeper sections. Highlights include Frauenburg, Nahekopf, the Nahe and Klausfelsen, as well as viewpoints and picnic areas. The distance and duration help you gauge the scope of the hike: it is an outing in its own right and should not be confused with the short walk from the car park to the castle. Trail conditions may change after heavy rain.

If you are looking for accommodation in Frauenberg, you can plan around the tour you have in mind. For a visit to Frauenburg, the footpath from the car park is a useful reference point; for the Countess Loretta Loop, the approximate walking time, route length and steeper sections are the main considerations. First decide which hike you want to shape your stay around, then plan the rest of the day accordingly.

Getting there and starting point

The Countess Loretta hike starts at the Uferwander car park on BahnhofstraĂźe, near the ruins of Frauenburg. Bus route 820 serves nearby stops, including Frauenberg/Mitte and Frauenberg/Gasthaus Thalbach. Parking is available at the Frauenburg car park by the Nahe. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable before setting off, as transport services may change.

More to discover in the wider Birkenfeld travel destination

Part of the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality, in the wider Birkenfeld travel destination. The Birkenfeld State Museum features permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans, Birkenfeld and the House of Wittelsbach, ironmaking in the Birkenfeld district, a historic classroom from around 1930, and the Oldenburg period. The wider destination therefore offers historical museum topics alongside the hikes that define Frauenberg and Frauenburg.

Shorter routes and themed trails are also among the options in the wider Birkenfeld travel destination. The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between Schwollen and Leisel features ten life-size, colourful figures of gods. In Hoppstädten-Weiersbach, the one-kilometre Obere Nahe Water Discovery Trail has four access points. Its themes include aquatic life such as barbel and gudgeon, water birds such as kingfishers and dippers, and dragonfly species such as the blue-tailed damselfly and the river clubtail.

The “In the Land of Kites, Storks and More” nature trail has 18 stations around Niederhambach, Schmißberg and Rimsberg. The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier offers a different perspective on the landscape: information boards cover the rare and endangered arnica meadows, their origins, conservation and biodiversity. The two trails have different focuses, from a nature trail with several stations to a shorter route centred on a clearly defined subject.

For a cycling trip, the wider Birkenfeld travel destination also has the RadLust-Schleife WasserTräume. It starts in Birkenfeld, runs via Brücken and Abentheuer, passes a historic ironworks, then follows the edge of the national park along the old Erzweg towards the Saarland border. This makes it easy to choose between hiking and cycling based on the routes and themes described.
