Seasonal bell ringing, a church more than 500 years old and the STUMM organ give Sulzbach / Hunsrück a distinctive cultural and historical profile. In addition, the “STUMM-Orgel-Weg” dream loop offers a multi-hour hiking option, with a stated distance and duration. This gives you local history and a clearly defined hiking option to consider side by side when planning your trip. Visits to the STUMM parlour are by appointment; factor in arranging a time if you would like to visit the exhibition rooms.
Church, Bells and the STUMM Organ
The small church in Sulzbach is at the heart of the village and has a rich history spanning more than 500 years. The ten o’clock bell-ringing tradition has also been preserved to this day. From 1 November to 1 March, the bells ring every evening at 10 p.m. The custom is said to help hikers who have lost their way find their bearings in the dark and snow. This seasonal custom, with its clearly defined dates, is part of the village’s history, and its purpose is directly connected with the conditions hikers face in the dark season.
The Protestant church is also connected with the history of the STUMM organ: the instrument dates back to 1746 and is considered the last work of Johann Michael Stumm. However, his sons had already worked on it. The year provides a more specific point of reference than the long history of the church, while the sons’ involvement adds an important detail to the story of how the instrument came about.
The STUMM Parlour and Heuchelheim
The STUMM parlour broadens the focus from an individual instrument to the two STUMM dynasties. It occupies two rooms in the former sexton’s residence above the Protestant parish hall. Mementos of both dynasties have been collected there, and visitors can take a journey back in time to old Sulzbach as shaped by the families. While the organ parlour focuses on a single work, the STUMM parlour explores mementos and the history of both dynasties. Visits are by appointment. Arrange your visit before travelling, rather than planning to drop in at any time.
The historic market square of Heuchelheim is close to Sulzbach, at the fork of an ancient trade route from the Glan to the Moselle. The market was the site of a Celtic-Roman place of worship and later served as the assembly site of the medieval High Court of Rhaunen. Heuchelheim thus complements the village’s religious and musical history with a history of worship and law. If you would like to compare places of cultural and historical interest, you will find two clearly distinct historical contexts here: the place of worship and its later use as an assembly site.
Hiking and Organ Music
The “STUMM-Orgel-Weg” dream loop is a 13.85-kilometre hiking route with a stated duration of four hours. These two figures give you a concrete guide if you would like to include a multi-hour hike in your stay; this is a hike in its own right, not just a short stroll.
There is also an audio library dedicated to the organ. It lets you experience organ music even when a particular church is closed or no organist is present. So alongside the hiking route, whose duration is clearly stated, there is another way to enjoy the sound of the organs.
