Nußbaum combines a varied landscape with winegrowing and striking traces of local history. This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: relaxing hikes, views over the Nahe Valley, vineyards and historic buildings. You can also stop for a meal in the village.

Hiking and scenery around Nußbaum

The varied landscape is ideal for relaxing hikes. From the Friedenseiche hiking car park, the view stretches across the Nahe Valley towards the Donnersberg. The Matzpfuhl natural monument offers a different connection with nature: it consists of a stand of poplar trees planted during the Napoleonic era. The viewpoint and natural monument thus offer two specific places from which to discover the landscape during a stay in Nußbaum.

The wine trail in Nußbaum showcases the landscape of the Nahe Valley. The Hildegard Trail adds themed stops: panel 19, entitled “Medicinal Herbs,” is located in the village square. At the exit from the village, panel 20 covers Hildegard’s book about “Land Animals.” The two panels focus on different subjects and are located at different points in the village.

One stage of the Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrim Trail connects Monzingen, Nußbaum, Bad Sobernheim, Staudernheim and Disibodenberg. If you are considering this route as part of your plans, check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Winegrowing and places to eat

Nußbaum wine matures on 20 hectares of vineyards in the Rotfeld, Höllenberg and Sonnenberg wine-growing areas. These three names give the local winegrowing landscape a distinct geographical structure. Nußbaum is also home to winegrowers and an inn where visitors can stop for a meal. Winegrowing and places to eat are therefore further local points of interest to consider when planning your trip, alongside hiking and history.

Local history and historic buildings

Nußbaum was the seat of the Knights of Nußbaum until 1400. In 1504, the village was almost completely burned down; about a century later, it was rebuilt using the remains of the old village centre. These dates mark two important historical periods: the time when it was the seat of the knights and the later reconstruction following its destruction.

The church’s imposing tower dates from the 13th century, and the church is used by both denominations. A Baroque grave cross stands in the churchyard of the simultaneous church. Nußbaum Castle was renovated in the 18th century and is privately owned. Each of these buildings represents a different period in the village’s history.

More cultural highlights in the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach

The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach offers additional cultural and nature-related highlights. In the town of Bad Kreuznach, the bridge houses were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, set in a historic park.

In Bretzenheim, you’ll find the Felseneremitage, a place of worship carved entirely into the rock. It probably dates back to prehistoric times and was repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from the outside all year round and without a guide; entry to the rock dwelling is currently not possible due to a rockfall. These examples belong to the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach and should be distinguished from the sights and landscape features of Nußbaum.
