From Lauschied’s heights, hikes offer views towards the Hunsrück; the town’s history ranges from an interpretation of its early settlement to Schinderhannes’s stay here. Lauschied lies between the Nahe and Glan rivers in the Glan-Nahe triangle. If you would like to make landscape and history the focus of your stay, you’ll find points of interest here for both.

Landscape and hiking

Lauschied lies on elevated ground between the Nahe and Glan rivers. Hikes from the heights offer views of the HunsrĂĽck. A circular route of around 15 kilometres was walked as part of an organised hike in 2023. It started at the community hall, passed water reservoirs, wind turbines and Jeckenbach, and returned to Lauschied. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the scope of this particular route. If you would like to follow it, check the current route and local conditions before setting out.

Local history across different periods

One historical interpretation dates Lauschied’s origins to the early seventh century. According to this interpretation, the settlement was established in a cleared area. The first mention dates to around the year 1200; the historical name “Villam Lubescheid iuxa Mettersheim” has been recorded. The dates refer to different aspects: the early seventh century indicates the interpreted beginnings of the settlement, while the mention around 1200 is the first written record under a particular name.

The Roman period is also part of the town’s history: Lauschied is associated with a Roman villa in the areas of Frohnhausen and An den Pfühlen. Johannes Bückler, known as Schinderhannes, stayed in Lauschied in 1797 and 1798. The shoemaker Johannes Leyendecker from Lauschied is described as the intellectual instigator of many crimes associated with Schinderhannes. Early settlement history, a Roman connection and later local stories linked to Schinderhannes thus offer different historical perspectives.

Church and St. GeorgshĂĽtte

Lauschied’s Protestant church was built in 1731 and is a protected cultural monument. It was used jointly by the Catholic and Lutheran congregations. The year of construction places the church in the 18th century; its shared use adds a denominational dimension to its history.

St. GeorgshĂĽtte is a Catholic church facility belonging to the parish of St. Willigis Nahe-Glan-Soon. It can accommodate up to 30 people and offers indoor space and crockery; facilities also include a kitchen, toilets, a barbecue and an outdoor area. If the hut is an option for your plans, check booking arrangements, access and availability in advance. The route leads through the sports field and along a gravel road into the forest. Also check local conditions before you arrive.

A cultural highlight of its own: Bad Kreuznach

In Bad Kreuznach, the bridge houses form a distinctive architectural attraction. They were built from 1480 onwards to address a lack of space and are half-timbered buildings on the piers of the old Nahe bridge, built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor house, set in a historic park. This urban focus on bridge architecture and museums differs from Lauschied’s local history, church and landscape.
