Schöneberg is situated on a ridge between the Gräfenbach Valley and the Guldenbach Valley. Forests, meadows and vineyards characterise the surrounding area; the vineyards lie to the south and the foothills of the Soonwald to the north. The landscape, hiking trails and historic buildings offer different ways to enjoy a stay here.

Hiking and Forest

Several hiking trails cross the municipality. A hike through the Steyerbach Valley offers close-up views of the local flora and fauna and passes extensive wild garlic fields. The visibility of the wild garlic varies by season. If you would like to experience this natural feature, take the time of year into account when planning your trip.

The Forest Experience Centre offers environmental education about forests in one- or multi-day formats for school classes and youth groups.

A forester invites visitors to take a walk through the centuries-old beech forest.

Vineyards and Local Highlights

The Schäfersley and Sonnenberg vineyards lie at the northern limit of the Nahe wine-growing region. The Lehnmühle exclave, associated with Schöneberg, is known for its homemade cheese. If you are planning a visit or would like to try the cheese, check access and availability locally.

Architectural History in Schöneberg

The Catholic parish church of the Finding of the Cross is a Romanesque Revival hall church built of rubble stone in 1895. The heritage area of the former castle grounds at Schloßstraße 5–11 and 8–12 comprises six farmsteads; their construction dates range from the 16th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. At Schloßstraße 4 stands a Baroque half-timbered house with a gateway dating from 1688 and a half-hipped roof. At Hauptstraße 23, a late Neoclassical farmstead dating from 1843 has survived, with some half-timbered sections.

Individual architectural features also mark specific points in time: a late Baroque wayside cross from the second half of the 18th century stands near Hauptstraße 52. The village fountain near Schloßstraße 3 dates from the 18th or 19th century and was probably restored in the 1920s. A Renaissance portal lintel dating from 1568 has been preserved at Hauptstraße 37. Finds from a Roman villa rustica with underfloor heating bear witness to an ancient Roman presence in Schöneberg.

Bad Kreuznach as the Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses tell their own architectural story. They were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300; the houses and bridge therefore date from different periods. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor house, set in a historic park.
