Hallgarten brings together two distinct interests: its hilly landscape, with opportunities for hiking and cycling, and cultural history centered on Montfort and local buildings. Wooded areas, gentle hills, sweeping panoramas and viewpoints characterize the surrounding area, which is considered especially suitable for hiking and cycling.
Hiking and the Ruins of Montfort Castle
Montfort Castle stands on a 280-meter-high wooded hill between Hallgarten and Duchroth. The castle was built around 1240 and conquered and destroyed in 1456. Today, the castle ruins are open to visitors free of charge. The approximately nine-meter-high stump of the keep is accessible as a viewpoint; its approximate height helps you put your visit in the context of exploring the site.
The small museum at the ruins displays archaeological finds from Montfort. The castle museum also presents architectural remains in a lapidarium and a reconstruction model of the castle. This offers different ways to explore the site’s history, with finds, architectural elements and a model displayed side by side. Burgfreunde Montfort e. V. regularly organizes festivals at the ruins.
Local History and Buildings
Hallgarten was first mentioned in 1391 under the name “Hargarten.” Two churches illustrate different forms of sandstone construction: the Catholic church is a choir-tower church built from red sandstone blocks and dates from 1937/38. The Protestant church is a Neo-Romanesque building made of sandstone blocks, dating from 1927. Their architectural forms and dates of construction can therefore be compared without overlooking their distinct designs.
Another historic building is the former school with a teacher’s residence. It is a sandstone-block building dated 1901. Together with the churches, it broadens the view of the village’s architectural history beyond the medieval castle: buildings from different periods and with different functions stand side by side.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Bad Kreuznach
The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach offers other distinct points of interest for those interested in cultural history. The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onward due to a lack of space. These half-timbered buildings stand on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the historic, listed former Bangert estate, set in a historic park.
