Kindenheim lies in the Kinderbach Valley, sheltered by the heights of Kahlenberg and Gerstenberg. Viticulture, hiking trails and historical traces offer different ways to explore the area: from named vineyard sites and scenic routes to the Kindenheim Steinlöcher on Gerstenberg.
Viticulture and Trails
The tradition of viticulture in Kindenheim dates back to around 1200. The local wine-growing area covers approximately 180 hectares and is cultivated by around 13 winemakers. Vineyard sites include Burgweg, Grafenstück, Katzenstein, Sonnenberg and Vogelsang. The area gives an idea of the scale of local wine-growing, while the named sites also show that several vineyards are part of the local landscape.
A hiking trail runs through the vineyards around Kindenheim and offers views across the Rhine Plain. The German Wine Route Hiking Trail also begins in Kindenheim. The municipal description for 2026 gives another option with a specific distance: the 3-kilometre Käskuche hiking trail runs through the Sonnenberg, Vogelsang and Burgweg vineyards. It passes the former northern village fortifications, the Jewish cemetery and the vineyard house; the route also offers panoramic views across the surrounding wine-growing plain. The trail descriptions highlight different features: vineyards and the Rhine Plain on the trail around Kindenheim, a starting point in the village on the German Wine Route Hiking Trail, and historical stops along the described Käskuche route. Check the latest route information and local notices before setting out.
Kindenheim Käskuche is served at every refreshment stand on Käskuche Hiking Day. If you have a date in mind, check in advance whether it will be available then.
Steinlöcher: History of Quarrying and Nature
The Kindenheim Steinlöcher on Gerstenberg are up to ten metres deep and are remnants of 19th-century limestone quarrying. They are designated as a nature reserve. Plants found there in the calcareous grassland include the wood anemone; the Amazon ant also occurs at the Steinlöcher. Observations may vary depending on the season and site conditions. Before visiting, check the current notices on local signs.
Historical Traces in the Village
The former village fortifications can be seen as an oval traced by narrow moat paths and sections of wall. Different building phases can be distinguished at St Martin’s Church: it was rebuilt around 1509, and alterations made between 1729 and 1734 gave it its Baroque appearance. The large Jewish cemetery contains gravestones from the 17th and 18th centuries. If you would like to visit the cemetery, check local access conditions beforehand. Just over two centuries separate the rebuilding around 1509 from the alterations that began in 1729.
