Bissersheim combines a long tradition of winegrowing with traces of different eras. The Palatinate wine village has a history of winegrowing stretching back more than 1,200 years; its 150 hectares of vineyards give this focus a tangible scale. At the same time, the church and historic buildings tell the story of the village. In the Eckbach valley, near the German Wine Route, vineyards frame the village.

Vineyard Landscapes and Trails

The surrounding area offers walks, hikes, bike rides and jogging routes. Trails lead through the vineyards; named options include the Kraut und Rübenwanderweg, the Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail and the Leininger Castle Trail. These offer a range of ways to get active in the winegrowing region, without prescribing a particular itinerary.

The 24.5-kilometer Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail follows the Eckbach through meadows, forests, orchards and winegrowing areas. Bissersheim is one stop along the route. The length refers to the entire hiking trail, not just the section in the village. If you plan to take this tour, check the route details before setting out.

The trails around Bissersheim appeal to walkers, hikers and cyclists alike. Depending on whether you prefer to explore the vineyards or the varied landscape along the Eckbach, the routes mentioned offer different points of reference. For your planning, it’s worth checking the route and its latest details in advance.

Local History and Buildings

Bissersheim was first mentioned in 774 under the name Bizziricheshaim. A 13th-century moated castle built by the Leiningers has not survived. By contrast, historic winemakers’ houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still stand in the village. Bissersheim thus brings together early written records, a vanished building and preserved houses from later centuries.

The Protestant church also reveals different historical influences. It was first mentioned in 1151 as belonging to Höningen Abbey. The ground-floor section of a medieval tower with a ribbed vault resting on consoles has been preserved. The nave is Baroque, and its arched windows reflect Leininger influence. The tower and nave thus bring together different architectural elements and styles in one place.

The Haldmühle is protected as a cultural monument; its main building dates from 1739. It is also used as an event venue. If you’re planning a visit in connection with an event, check current dates and access arrangements.

The Bruchmühle was first mentioned in 1583 and is used as a residence and guesthouse. It can only be viewed from the outside. As access conditions may change, check the current situation before planning a visit.

Experience the Wine

Several wineries in Bissersheim invite visitors to tastings. Weingut Tobias Mussler continues a family tradition of winegrowing dating back to 1831. New wine creations are available at its vinotheque. Tastings and offerings may change; contact the winery in advance to ask about current options.

Bissersheim therefore offers concrete starting points for choosing what to focus on during your stay: the vineyard landscape and its trails, the village’s architectural history, or tastings at the wineries. Those interested in historic buildings can discover different eras and visitor arrangements at the church and mills; those who prefer to be outdoors can follow the trails mentioned here.
