Nine historic streets, two parks and three almost entirely preserved castle-like manor houses are part of Dirmstein’s historic district. Soccer golf and the Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail offer two very different ways to make your stay active. When planning, it is worth considering the local history and the distances of each route separately.

Historic District and Architectural History

The historic district comprises the streets Marktstraße, Metzgergasse, Mitteltor, Salzgasse, Affenstein, Laumersheimer Straße, Herrengasse, Kirchgasse and Obertor, as well as two parks. It is defined above all by late Baroque buildings dating from the decades after the Palatinate was devastated during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689. The district also includes three almost entirely preserved castle-like manor houses.

Castles and Their History

A fortified manor complex has stood on the site of Sturmfeder Castle since the 13th century; it was the seat of the Dirmstein knights of Lerch. The former castle estate is now Schlossplatz, in the center of Dirmstein.

The Episcopal Palace of Dirmstein is a former castle estate near the Eckbach, on the eastern edge of the village. A predecessor building is documented from 1240. The palace is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside; check current access arrangements before your visit.

Local Tours with Wine and Food

Wine tastings and culinary samples may be included in local tours of Dirmstein; visits to local restaurants can also be arranged. Ask in advance which options are currently available, as the scope of the tours may change.

Soccer Golf: Two Different Courses

Soccerpark Fußballgolf Dirmstein opened in 2006 as Germany’s first soccer golf facility. The fun course for beginners and families has 18 holes, is around 1,200 meters long and takes about 1.5 hours. The premium course has 21 holes, is 1,800 meters long and takes about two hours. Compared with the fun course, it has three additional holes and is around 600 meters longer; playing time is approximately half an hour longer.

No special preparation, fitness level or equipment is required; you can get started after a short briefing. Check the current course details before your visit.

Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail on Foot or by Bike

The Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail is suitable for hikers and cyclists. It runs for 25.3 kilometers from the source of the Eckbach near Naturfreundehaus Hertlingshausen to Dirmstein, passing through Dirmstein, Altleiningen, Neuleiningen-Tal, Kleinkarlbach, Kirchheim, Bissersheim, Großkarlbach and Laumersheim. Twelve information stations provide details about the towns and sights along the route.

For this outing, the route and trail markings are important planning details. Check the latest route information and trail conditions before setting off.

Location Between the Palatinate and Rheinhessen

Dirmstein lies in the triangle formed by Worms, Frankenthal and Grünstadt, on the border between the Palatinate and Rheinhessen. The village is considered the gateway to the Leiningerland and a transition from the “vegetable garden of Germany” to the wine-growing landscape of the German Wine Route.
