Vineyards at the foot of Saffenburg Castle, hiking trails with views over the town and regular wine tastings shape Mayschoß. You can choose from different highlights: a hiking stage of around four kilometres, several named viewpoints or seasonal wine events. This lets you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.

Between vineyards and castle ruins

Mayschoß lies among vineyards at the foot of Saffenburg Castle. The nearby Red Wine Hiking Trail offers views over the town, bringing together townscapes and vineyard scenery as you plan your route. From the castle plateau, the view stretches across Mayschoß, the Ahr loop, steep vineyard terraces and the Mönchberg vineyard site. In 2020, the panorama from Saffenburg Castle was named the Ahr’s “Most Beautiful View of Wine Country.”

Hiking trails and viewpoints

The Altenahr–Mayschoß section of the Red Wine Hiking Trail is a moderately difficult hike of about four kilometres. At Ümerich, a viewpoint looks out over Mayschoß, Are Castle and the Ahr Valley. The Great Saffenburg Loop leads to viewpoints at Saffenburg Castle, Schwedenkopf, Ümerich and Mohrenkopf. You can choose based on whether a route with an approximate distance or several named viewpoints matters more to you.

The Ahr Cycle Route, the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Eifelsteig pass directly through Mayschoß. After changes in the weather or infrastructure, it is worth checking the route. From Mayschoß station, you can reach Saffenburg Castle via the Ahr Valley Trail A1. The narrow path to Ümerich has rocky sections and requires sure footing and sturdy footwear. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

History of Saffenburg Castle

Saffenburg Castle is considered the oldest castle ruin in the region. It was destroyed in 1704, and restoration of its surviving foundations began in 2004. There were therefore 300 years between its destruction and the start of restoration. The ruins are recognised as a cultural monument under Rhineland-Palatinate’s heritage protection law. You can connect the site’s history with the surrounding landscape from the castle plateau: sights include the Ahr loop, vineyard terraces and the Mönchberg vineyard site.

The grounds of Saffenburg Castle can be rented for family celebrations and corporate events. Rental arrangements may change, so check the details with the operator in advance.

Wine tastings, regional cuisine and festivals

At the Mayschoß wine shop, you can attend regular wine tastings and cellar tours without booking in advance. As the operator’s arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm before your visit. Regional snack platters with cold cuts, cheese, pickled vegetables, grape jelly and bread are recommended to accompany wine tastings. Mayschoß wine taverns and seasonal wine taverns also serve regional dishes with Ahr wines; check the current offerings at individual establishments.

Mayschoß celebrates a wine blossom festival in mid-May and a wine festival from late September to the end of October. These festivals offer different seasonal occasions: the wine blossom festival takes place in spring, while the autumn festival period runs from late September into late October. If you are travelling for a festival, check the exact dates in advance.
