Hönningen lies in a bend of the River Ahr in the Ahr Valley. Two local themes can help you plan your visit: the Ahr Cycle Path, with its Sculpture Trail and fitness course, and the Teufelsley Trail leading to the Teufelsley quartzite formation. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether cycling combined with local historical interpretation or a trail leading to a geological formation better suits your interests.

Cycle Path, Sculpture Trail and Fitness Course

The Ahr Cycle Path near Hönningen includes the Sculpture Trail, which interprets local history, as well as a fitness course. These two additions offer different experiences: the Sculpture Trail focuses on local history, while the fitness course centres on physical activity. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would like to include these themes or focus on the cycle path itself.

Ongoing reconstruction work may affect cycling infrastructure and individual sculptures. If these features are part of your plans, check their current status in advance.

To Teufelsley and Other Trails

The Teufelsley Trail leads from Hönningen to Teufelsley, a quartzite formation. From the summit, you can enjoy views across the Ahr Heights. Trails from Hönningen are also connected to the AhrSteig and the Teufelsley Nature Reserve. The Teufelsley Trail focuses on the rock formation and the views; the other trail connections offer a different focus for planning.

Trail conditions can vary. So check the latest trail conditions when planning your route.

Culture and Other Trails in the Wider Ahrweiler Destination

The wider Ahrweiler destination offers distinct cultural attractions. The Schützen House in Ahrweiler displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries, including uniforms, pictorial documentation and historic marksmen’s rifles. Visitors to the Roman Villa at Silberberg in Ahrweiler can see a model of the Roman estate and watch an audiovisual presentation. These attractions offer different experiences: one focuses on Schützen objects from several centuries, while the other presents a Roman estate.

Since 2002, the three Ahrweiler marksmen’s societies have run a museum. Visits are possible by request. For historical and local-history questions about the region, the Ahrweiler District Archives provides information and advice. The museum’s Schützen objects therefore differ from the District Archives’ advisory role on historical and local-history questions about the region.

The Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig are certified hiking trails in Ahrweiler District. The Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous signposted local trails add to the district’s network. The Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Path are cycling routes that make Ahrweiler District particularly appealing to cycling tourists. Thus, the wider destination offers district-wide hiking and cycling themes alongside the local trails around Hönningen.
