Ahrweiler offers different ways to explore history: the Old Town showcases medieval fortifications, while the Roman Villa on Silberberg Hill takes visitors back to antiquity with a model of a Roman estate and an audiovisual presentation. Other highlights include a museum run by Ahrweiler’s shooting societies, the Government Bunker Documentation Site in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and trails throughout the district. When planning your visit, it is worth checking what makes each attraction special and its visitor arrangements.

Old Town, City Gates and Stadtoase

Ahrweiler’s Old Town features a 13th-century ring of city walls, four city gates, narrow lanes and half-timbered houses. The Ahrtor is the largest and most heavily fortified of the four gates. Construction of the city fortifications and gates can be dated to the period beginning in 1246. The ring of walls, gates and lanes gives the Old Town a clearly defined historic character.

Close to the center of the Ahrweiler district is the Stadtoase, a place to meet and relax. The green space is lined with chestnut trees and landscaped with plants that are friendly to insects. Its listed amenities include a pavilion with a green roof, a table tennis table and numerous benches. This place to relax complements the Old Town’s historic sights.

Roman Villa and House of the Shooting Societies

The Roman Villa on Silberberg Hill in Ahrweiler features a model of a Roman estate and an audiovisual presentation. In the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler urban area, a largely accessible tour also leads through Roman rooms, where visitors can explore the refined domestic culture and way of life of the Romans. The Roman Villa Museum displays well-preserved walls, a bathing complex, a kitchen and fully preserved underfloor heating systems. These exhibits shed light on different aspects of a Roman home.

Group tours of the museum provide an overview of the archaeological discovery’s history and aim to bring antiquity to life. If you are planning such a tour, check the current booking conditions. The House of the Shooting Societies in Ahrweiler offers a different historical perspective: the town’s three shooting societies have run the museum since 2002. Its art-historical treasures from the past three centuries include uniforms, photographic documentation and historic shooting rifles. Visits and guided tours are available by appointment and can be arranged for groups of eight or more.

The Ahrweiler District Archive is a point of contact and advice center for questions about the region’s history and local heritage. It complements visits to collections and historic sites with a resource for regional topics.

Government Bunker Documentation Site

In Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, 203 meters of the Government Bunker’s 17.3-kilometer complex can still be visited as a documentation site. An approximately 90-minute guided tour passes through underground areas and offers insights into original locations and stories from the period. The program also covers topics such as nuclear arms buildup, espionage, secret NATO plans and scenarios for a Third World War. The tours are intended for private groups, school classes and individual visitors.

Tickets for the regularly scheduled tours for individual visitors must be booked in advance through the online shop. Check the current tour dates before planning your visit so you can account for the fixed booking steps.

Hiking and Cycling Routes in the Ahrweiler District

The range of trails extends beyond the town: the certified hiking trails Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig are located in the Ahrweiler district. The Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous marked local trails add to the network. The AhrSteig links the Ahr spring near Blankenheim in the Eifel with the mouth of the Ahr where it flows into the Rhine near Sinzig, over seven stages. The Red Wine Hiking Trail runs for around 36 kilometers between Bad Bodendorf and Altenahr.

There is also specific guidance on using the Red Wine Hiking Trail with a stroller: sections above the Bad Neuenahr and Ahrweiler districts can be used with one. Before setting out on the AhrSteig, it is advisable to check for current trail notices. The district also has cycling routes: with the Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Route, the Ahrweiler district particularly appeals to cycling tourists. These routes are located throughout the district and offer different options for hiking and cycling tours.
