A former basalt quarry, half-timbered houses and a village museum give Hoffeld several different facets to explore during a stay. There is also a challenging mountain bike route starting and ending in the village, as well as a hiking option near Nohn. Visitors looking to combine culture and activity will find a range of options, each with different conditions for visiting.

Basalt and the landscape around Hoffeld

Hoffeld lies at the eastern foot of the 500-metre-high Burgkopf. After basalt quarrying ended in 1981, a lake formed in a former quarry; it is leased to the Hoffeld fishing club. A tourism plan dated September 22, 2025, describes Hoffeld Lake as fenced off and not open to the public. The lake’s formation is part of the village’s history, but the shore is not open to public visits.

A report published in 2019 and updated in 2020 describes information boards at the former winch house of Hoffeld’s old quarry. They explain the history of the quarry and the village. Check the condition of the boards on site before including them in your plans.

Half-timbered houses and the village museum

Numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses define the historic village centre. The Hoffeld Village Museum is housed in one of these buildings. The exhibition explains the cramped living conditions of earlier generations and explores everyday life among the rural population in Eifel villages. Before being taken over by the municipality in the 1980s, the house was home to a large family for many years.

Directly in front of the museum stands a fountain made from Hoffeld basalt columns, which contributes to the village’s character. St. Donatus Chapel also has a historical story of its own: it was built in 1975, but its altar dates from the 18th century. The two dates highlight the difference between when the chapel was built and the age of its altar.

The Hoffeld Village Museum is described as having no regular opening hours. Check access arrangements before your visit. The Dorfmuseum Hoffeld bus stop is 50 metres from the museum; check the current timetable before travelling.

A land grant from Emperor Lothair I in 855 included land in Hoffeld and Barweiler. The annual Kirmes fair is also part of local history: it is celebrated on October 20 in Kirmutscheid and the associated church communities, including Hoffeld. Specific event details may vary.

Hiking or mountain biking

The hiking option near Nohn is the circular route “Around the Mordhügel”: it is 13 kilometres long, takes 3 hours and 20 minutes, and is rated moderately difficult. The route sheet was updated on April 25, 2024; check trail conditions before setting out. A challenging mountain bike route starts and ends at the Feye Haus in Hoffeld. It leads through the landscapes of the High Eifel to the Dreimühlen Waterfall and the ruins of Nürburg Castle, and passes Hoffeld’s basalt lake.

The routes differ in activity and level of difficulty: near Nohn, a moderately difficult circular hike with a stated duration is an alternative to a mountain bike route rated challenging that starts and ends in Hoffeld. You can choose based on whether you prefer hiking or mountain biking, without assuming the same time commitment for both routes.
