Between fields and an extensive forest on the northern edge of the village, Sierscheid connects hiking trails with a well-preserved village centre. The village lies in the northern Eifel at an elevation of around 400 metres. Fields surround the settlement on three sides, while the forest begins to the north. For planning, you can first choose between the short panoramic trail at Dümpelhardt and a considerably longer section of the AhrSteig.

Hiking around Sierscheid

The AhrSteig passes Sierscheid on its way from Insul via Dümpelhardt to Liers. Its fourth stage covers 17.4 kilometres from Insul via Sierscheid, Dümpelhardt, Liers and Linder Höhe to Kreuzberg. It is marked in both directions with the blue AhrSteig logo. The AhrSteig is around 100 kilometres long in total and stretches from the source of the Ahr to its mouth.

On the ascent towards Dümpelhardt, Stage 4 passes sparse heathland; it then leads through meadows and forests into the Liersbach valley. The panoramic trail around Dümpelhardt offers a different experience: it is just under three kilometres long, easy to walk, and starts at the wayside cross above the Maternus Chapel. Along the way, views stretch over Eifel meadows and forests into the upper Ahr Valley; the Nürburg can also be seen from the panoramic trail.

The distances make for a clear comparison: the panoramic trail is a short, easy-to-walk option, while Stage 4 covers a considerably longer route. If you would like to include the Ahr, you can reach it on foot from the village; it lies below Sierscheid. From the village, the AhrSteig descends either towards Schuld or towards Liers and the Ahr. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Village Centre, Chapel and Traditions

Sierscheid is a well-preserved clustered village with characteristic farmsteads. By the end of 2016, almost all had been restored in accordance with heritage conservation requirements. The Maternus Chapel is a simple, single-nave building first constructed around 1730; later renovations also included work in 2024. Alongside its hiking opportunities, the village’s layout and chapel give it a distinct historical character.

Sierscheid was first mentioned in 1290 and at that time belonged to the Electoral Cologne district of Nürburg. Local customs are also part of village life: these include a St Martin’s procession and bonfire, as well as the raising of a maypole in May. The village fair takes place on the third weekend in September. If you would like to plan a trip around this occasion, check the specific event dates in advance.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can tailor your stay to the different trails and your interest in village history. Whether you focus on the short panoramic trail or the longer AhrSteig stage makes a clear difference to the hiking distance you plan.
