For a stay in Wickede (Ruhr), you can choose between cycling routes along the Ruhr, longer circular tours and signposted hiking trails. The tours vary in length, elevation and route through the districts; there is also the natural riverbank, the Art and Poetry Trail and individual restored cultural sites. This lets you tailor your plans to your preferred route length and whether you want to focus on the outdoors or culture.
Cycling along the Ruhr and through the districts
After the railway bridge, the cycle path runs between the course of the Ruhr and a small canal before turning right onto the Ruhr promenade. To the south, the naturally shaped river course, with its bodies of water and riverside landscapes, offers places to stop and rest. Along the route, views of the Ruhr and the Art and Poetry Trail invite you to linger.
A cycling tour of about 26 km starts in the centre of Wickede, passes Gut Scheda, SchlĂĽckingen, Waltringen and Echthausen, and returns to Wickede; it includes climbs. In Wickede, it follows the cycle and hiking path westwards along the Ruhr. If you would like to compare this route with a longer loop: a 29.8 km circular cycling tour also starts in the centre, runs through Wiehagen, SchlĂĽckingen, Echthausen and Wimbern, and partly uses the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route.
The cycling tour “Around and through the municipality of Wickede” runs along sections of the Strullbach through a protected landscape area towards Wiehagen. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider both the river course and the stream and protected-landscape scenery as different route settings.
Hiking: RundWickede and shorter sections
The “RundWickede” circular hiking trail is 26.5 km long; with a detour to the Marienbuche, it is 27 km. It climbs repeatedly, crosses the Ruhr Valley twice and has only moderate inclines. Shortly before the weir at the Echthausen waterworks, the trail passes the Wickede outdoor pool.
A well-signposted 10 km section of the hiking trail starts in Echthausen. Among other things, it offers a view of the airport runway and then leads through the Echthausen forest. The shorter distance given here complements the length of the full circular hiking trail; the two figures refer to different sections of the route.
The municipality of Wickede (Ruhr) has a total of 27 km of signposted hiking trails that showcase the scenic highlights of its five districts: Wickede, Echthausen, Wimbern, Wiehagen and Schlückingen. These include the Art and Poetry Trail along the banks of the Ruhr. The 27 km of trails in the network should be distinguished from the 26.5 km “RundWickede” circular hiking trail.
Small cultural sites in Echthausen and SchlĂĽckingen
Individual places away from the route descriptions also add a cultural dimension to your tour. The former manor in Echthausen is a lovingly restored listed building in private ownership. SchlĂĽckingen has a chapel lovingly restored by local residents. Do not plan to visit the manor as a site open to the public.
Getting there by bus
RLG bus route R46 connects Neheim with Wickede (Ruhr); in Echthausen, the TalstraĂźe stop is listed. Check the current timetable and stop information before travelling, as routes and stop details may change.
Culture in the wider destination of Soest
In the wider destination of Soest, museums and events offer a cultural focus of their own. The Osthofentormuseum in Soest uses information panels, large-format texts, photos, graphics and a scale model of the town to provide an overview of its more than 1,000-year history and topographical development. The Museum Wilhelm Morgner with RAUM SCHROTH hosts temporary exhibitions and a permanent exhibition of Soest Expressionist Wilhelm Morgner.
Another cultural event in the wider destination of Soest is the Soest Feud: this medieval festival takes place every two years in Soest and brings together more than 900 participants from 12 European nations. If the festival is relevant to your travel plans, check the dates and programme in advance. These attractions are in Soest; the routes and cultural sites described in Wickede remain separate options to consider when choosing the focus of your trip.
