Möhnesee offers a variety of highlights for a stay: water, nature and distinctive landmarks. The dam is a protected cultural monument, while cycling, walks and diving offer different ways to experience the lake and its surroundings.
Dam and Lake as Points of Reference
The dam at Möhnesee is now a protected cultural monument and the region’s main attraction. The lake has a water surface of 1,037 hectares, stretches for 8 kilometers and is up to 800 meters wide. At its maximum level, it reaches a maximum depth of 32 meters.
The dam tour runs through the Hevearm and Hevesee nature reserves and along the 3.6-kilometer-long Wasser & Wald nature promenade on the Uferrandweg. As access conditions in protected areas may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. Cycling offers another way to explore the lake: around 40 kilometers of shoreline invite you to discover Möhnesee on two wheels.
Views, Lakeside Park and Nature Stations
The Möhnesee Tower is located within the municipality of Möhnesee, in Arnsberger Wald Nature Park. From there, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over the expansive lake landscape and the region’s dense forests.
The lakeside park in Körbecke combines various shoreline and leisure areas. These include a lakeside staircase, a public swimming area, spacious sunbathing and relaxation areas, and separate cycle and footpaths. There is also a well-developed skate park that is free to use at any time, a large play area, a family terrace with a play area for small children, and a multi-purpose court. Check the local availability of these facilities before your visit.
In Völlinghausen, within the municipality, the nature experience area includes, in addition to the wildlife park, a forest bee station, an orchard with an insect hotel, an arboretum and a landscape of pollarded willows. The individual stations can be explored on a walk. The wildlife park, which is free to enter, invites visitors to feed and spend time with goats, sheep, red deer, fallow deer and sika deer.
Chapel and Dive Site
Drüggelter Chapel is an unusual twelve-sided central-plan building with 16 columns and mysterious ornaments. Steeped in legend, this place of worship and culture provides a special setting for a variety of events.
For divers, a dive site marked off with buoys lies on the southern shore of Möhnesee, west of Delecker Bridge in Delecker Bay. It is in a former quarry with a sandy bottom. Diving is possible year-round in the Möhne Reservoir; the dive school PRODIVE operates the site for a fee. As operator and access conditions may change, it is best to check them before your visit.
Getting There
Möhnesee is easy to reach by public transport or by car. For specific journeys, it is worth checking the current connections for your travel date. This will help you plan your journey around the activities that interest you at the lake and in the municipality.
