Berleburg Castle is the historic heart of Bad Berleburg. The townscape brings together half-timbered houses and a park with the castle’s collections; other options range from a fairy-tale quiz hike to a longer cycling loop. This can help you decide whether local history or active excursions should take centre stage during your stay.

Castle, Old Town and Park

The historic townscape includes Berleburg Castle, the Orangery, the adjoining park and slate-roofed half-timbered houses in the upper town. Berleburg Castle is the focal point of the historic old town. A walk through the castle park can be combined with a stroll around the historic town—a combination that brings architecture and open space together.

The castle displays portraits of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg family, as well as weapons, hunting equipment and trophies. The collection also includes uniforms, porcelain, engraved glass, stucco ceilings and furniture. These different objects add concrete insights into the furnishings to the view of the castle and old town.

The castle park covers approximately 12 hectares and was laid out in the first half of the 18th century. A Baroque summer pavilion once stood at the western end of the Cross Garden in the castle park. It was used by the princely family for summer celebrations and housed citrus and orange trees in winter. These uses connect the building with the different seasons; the park’s size and date of creation also provide a clear historical context.

Nature and active excursions

The visitor centre for the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park and the Wisent-Welt-Wittgenstein exhibition are located in the BĂĽrgerhaus on the market square. If you plan to visit these attractions, check the current exhibition status beforehand, as the displays may change.

The Tourist Information Office offers free visitor advice and sells hiking maps. You can ask for advice there when planning a hike and buy a map. As visitor services and map availability may change, it is advisable to make a quick enquiry if you have a specific need.

The Märchenspur combines a family hike with a fairy-tale quiz at six stations. A reward can be collected from the Tourist Information Office. Quiz materials and rewards may change; it is best to check what is currently available before setting off.

For cycling, the approximately 40-kilometre “Starke Landschaft – Starke Tiere” (Strong Landscapes – Strong Animals) loop offers a different scale. It follows the Eder Cycle Route, passes through forests, meadows and smaller settlements, and includes a detour to Wisent-Wildnis on the Rothaarsteig. Wisent-Wildnis, near Wingeshausen, presents a nature conservation project considered unique in Western Europe. Check both route conditions and access to the attraction before your trip.

The Drehkoite in Girkhausen offers a glimpse of traditional craftsmanship: this old woodworking workshop is associated with traditional bowl turning and historic woodworking techniques. Opening arrangements may vary seasonally. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting options in advance.

More perspectives in the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination

The WaldSkulpturenWeg also offers a regional perspective beyond the town centre. In the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination, it runs between Bad Berleburg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerland district. The route is just under 23 kilometres long and features eleven works of art.

The Ginsburg in Hilchenbach offers another distinct perspective, also within the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination. It is a prominent point on the Rothaarsteig route. The viewing platform atop the reconstructed keep offers sweeping panoramic views.

For a visit to the slate show mine in Raumland, the Raumland-Ort stop is a useful landmark: bus route R33 between Bad Berleburg and Hatzfeld serves Raumland, and a short walk leads from the stop to the mine. Check the current timetable before travelling.
