The Old Bailiwick in Burbach brings together a half-timbered building dating from 1698 and information about the nature park; it is also home to changing art exhibitions and a 28.40-kilometre circular cycling tour. This makes it possible to consider culture, orientation and exercise as different focuses for a stay.
The Old Bailiwick: Half-timbering and nature park information
Since 2022, the Old Bailiwick, renovated and converted in keeping with its listed status, and the restored tithe barn have served as central, multifunctional meeting places for residents and visitors to the municipality of Burbach. The half-timbered building of the Old Bailiwick dates from 1698. Together, the two sites combine a specific historical context with a contemporary role as meeting places.
The Old Bailiwick Burbach Nature Park Information Centre is the southernmost gateway to the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park. There you can find information, tips and suggestions about the nature park and its “treasure chests” and “jewels”. The Burbach Tourist Information Centre is a central point of contact for day-trippers, holidaymakers and visitors. It provides information about accommodation, hiking routes, cycling tours, nature experiences, themed tours, cultural offerings, places of interest and local restaurants in Burbach and its villages.
Families can borrow the nature discovery backpack by booking in advance at the Old Bailiwick or the town hall. It contains, among other things, binoculars, plant and animal identification guides, and a map of the “natural treasures”. Its contents combine observing and identifying with a map devoted to the natural treasures.
Art, books and stage performances
The Römergalerie Burbach hosts changing art exhibitions by artists from the region and beyond. If you want to plan your visit around a particular exhibition, check what is currently on display beforehand. The book flea market also has a permanent home at the Römergalerie; check the current opening times before planning a visit.
The Heimhof-Theater Burbach offers a varied stage programme featuring children’s theatre, music, cabaret, the “Filmpalast” with older film classics, and improv theatre. The programme ranges from theatre and music to film classics and improvised performances. For a particular theatre or film evening, you can consult the current programme.
Cycling tour and GPS offers
“Through the Villages – Around Burbach” is a 28.40-kilometre regional circular route of moderate difficulty and moderate fitness requirements. Panoramic views are also among the tour’s features. It starts and finishes at Burbach town hall. The distance and difficulty rating offer different points of reference when choosing a tour; take both into account when planning. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
In July 2026, the development of three GPS tours for Burbach was announced. The family office was to develop them together with the Tourist Information Centre, with support from the Alte Vogtei Burbach local history society. In future, young and older explorers were to follow GPS markers showing the coordinates of the next point along each route. Before planning, check whether the tours are now available.
