Siegen offers various ways to explore art and history: a gallery focused on regional art, an internationally oriented museum, castle history and traces of mining. There are also historical tours and paths through parks. During your stay, you can choose from a range of activities—from exhibitions and guided introductions to the city’s history to walks.
Art and History at the Upper Castle
The Haus Seel Municipal Gallery showcases the regional art scene and holds up to eleven temporary exhibitions each year. As the exhibition program may change, check the current program when planning a specific visit. The Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen has an international focus and opened in 2001. The Rubens Gallery houses nine original paintings by Peter Paul Rubens.
For centuries, the Upper Castle was the residence of the rulers of Nassau; since 1905, it has housed the Siegerlandmuseum. Its collection on economic history includes evidence of the region’s mining and ironworking traditions. Portraits of the ruling family are on display in the Upper Castle’s Oranien Hall. The art collection, regional economic history and former residence offer different points of interest for a visit focused on culture.
City History and Mining
The “Around the Krönchen” tour brings nearly 900 years of Siegen’s history to life in the historic city center. The tour also includes a visit to the historic princely crypt in the Lower Castle. Dates, booking conditions and access arrangements may change; check the latest information before taking part.
The Hainer Stollen extends about 720 meters beneath Siegberg. At the visitor mine, expert-guided tours introduce visitors to the history of mining. As tour availability may change, check current dates in advance. Together with the Siegerlandmuseum’s collection on economic history, it offers another way to explore mining: through the collection and through an expert-guided tour of the visitor mine.
Walking Trails, Park and Children’s Scavenger Hunt
The surrounding castle park offers a chance to explore several aspects of Siegen’s history on a walk. Its variety of plants makes it a worthwhile destination in every season. In the Historic Wildlife Park, three circular trails pass mature trees, the Hermelsbach stream and activity stations. Trail conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.
Children can take part in the “A Mine at a Dizzying Height” scavenger hunt. It lasts about two hours and explores 800 years of Siegen’s history through puzzles. This is a time-limited activity alongside the museum and guided-tour options. If booking for a group, check the current conditions in advance.
Arriving and Planning Your Stay
From Siegen Central Station, the walking route to the upper town leads along Bahnhofstraße, through Kölner Tor and along Kölner Straße. Pedestrian routes may change, so it is worth checking the current route. Siegen is also a university town and offers tourist information services as well as theater and concert events.
If you are looking for a hotel in Siegen, you can use your interests to guide your stay—for example, exhibitions and castle history, mining, or walks in the castle park and Historic Wildlife Park. The trails, collections and guided tours offer different options, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
