Pilgrimage traditions, hiking trails and the Agger offer different ways to discover Overath. This means that practical decisions take center stage when planning your trip: a festival date, a suitable route length or conditions on the water. Which of these you focus on will determine what you should check in advance.

Pilgrimage Sites and Festival Dates

The Church of St. Mary’s Visitation in Marialinden remains a destination for many pilgrims. Every year, a festival octave in honour of the Mother of God is also celebrated in Marialinden during the first week of July. If you want to plan your trip around the celebration, check the specific dates for the year in question in advance.

Hiking Trails for Different Distances

The Overath Panorama Trail is about 16 kilometres long, passes through the Agger river landscape and starts at Overath Cultural Station. The Marialinden Cloverleaf adds four themed hiking trails to the selection. They start at Marialinden Cathedral and range from 8 to 16 kilometres in length. The Cloverleaf therefore offers everything from shorter walks to routes about as long as the Panorama Trail.

The Overath Pilgrimage Route, at about 9 kilometres, and the Mining Trail, at about 12 kilometres, also offer useful reference points when choosing a route. If you’re looking for a longer route, consider the Bergischer Weg: this long-distance hiking trail, awarded the “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany” seal, is about 259 kilometres long and has 14 stages; one stage passes directly through Overath. The total distance refers to the long-distance trail, not the stage through Overath.

A municipal notice dated 4 March 2026 reported that a new hiking information board was installed on 25 February in the car park at the Cyriax school centre. It provides hikers with an additional point of reference. If you plan to use the board, check that it is still there before setting out.

The Agger, Gut Eichthal and Other Activities

Gut Eichthal is a publicly accessible historic manor house in an English-style landscape park on the Agger. A footbridge connects the estate with the town of Overath, linking the grounds to the hiking trail network. Local residents use the large park as a place to relax.

The Agger is ideal for canoe trips and leisurely paddling excursions; particularly experienced paddlers can explore Overath from the water. Conditions are not the same everywhere: some stretches of the river are rough, with hidden currents. For commercial boat rentals and trips by inexperienced paddlers, navigating the Agger is permitted only with professional supervision. Navigation on the Agger is permitted when the minimum water release at the Vilkerath power plant is 5 mÂł/s; the new gauge designation is No. 25a. Check the water level and applicable rules before setting out.

For cyclists, the Agger-Sülz Cycle Route runs for several kilometres in Overath and Rösrath along a dedicated cycle and pedestrian path beside busy federal and state roads. This route is a practical factor to consider when planning your own ride. For a different kind of water experience, visit the Badino in Overath: it has a 25-metre sports pool and a leisure pool with a water temperature of 32°C and massage jets. Check the details before your visit.
