Historic themed trails, varied landscapes and the Stockhausen concerts shape the options in Kürten. When planning, it is worth looking at the specific differences: some routes combine trails with cultural and historical landmarks, while others lead to a named high point or pass through several types of landscape. There is also a regular programme of music events.

Hiking trails by distance and theme

The municipality has more than 200 kilometres of marked hiking trails. A 16-kilometre section of the Bergischer Panoramasteig passes through the municipality of Kürten. The approximately seven-kilometre Olpe Heritage Trail takes in almost half of the roughly 100 cultural and historical landmarks in the former municipality of Olpe. Since the municipal reorganisation in 1975, Olpe has been part of the municipality of Kürten. The route therefore combines a manageable distance with a specific historical theme.

When choosing the Kürten Mill Trail, you can take the trail surface into account: this circular hiking route follows forest and farm tracks, paths and roads with little traffic, and includes a few climbs. If you choose a route based on its trail types, you’ll find a mix of different surfaces here; be sure to factor in the climbs when planning.

The nine-kilometre D6 – Weites Wasserland circular hike climbs from the Osbach valley to the village of Müllenberg and continues to the Hämmerich near Oberossenbach. At 292 metres, the Hämmerich is the highest point in the municipality of Kürten. The approximately 8.5-kilometre D7 Eselsrunde starts and ends at the Catholic Church of St. Antonius Einsiedler in the centre of Kürten-Bechen. It leads through cool valleys, shady forests, sunny heights and rural residential areas; the church’s history began about 800 years ago. The D6 is only slightly longer than the D7. Their different routes are therefore also worth considering when choosing: one leads to a named high point, while the other passes through several types of landscape and includes a historic starting and finishing point.

Stockhausen concerts and a memorial

The Stockhausen concerts and courses take place regularly in Kürten. Stockhausen interpreters work with music students to prepare works by the composer and perform them in free public concerts. If you’d like to include a concert in your stay, check the specific event dates in advance.

Another cultural detail is Karlheinz Stockhausen’s grave in the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Kürten. It is marked by a round stainless-steel plate he designed, measuring two metres in diameter. It shows a notation from the LICHT formula and the composer’s signature; the reverse bears the St. Michael’s Cross.

Walking directions in Delling

It takes about eight minutes to walk from the Kürten Delling Abzw. bus stop on Schultheismühle Road to the Protestant church in Delling. If you plan to take the bus, check current services and journey times in advance.
