Dorsten offers cycling and culture enthusiasts a range of ways to plan their trip. For a stay that combines these interests, it is worth distinguishing between a long-distance route, shorter themed trails and independent cultural venues. You can then plan each day according to distance and areas of interest.

Cycling routes from long-distance trails to the canal

The Römer-Lippe Route passes through Dorsten. Dorsten lies at kilometre 251 of the 295-kilometre route from Detmold to Xanten. Dorsten railway station is a starting point for the BahnLandLust cycling route from Dorsten to Coesfeld. The surrounding cycle network is part of the Radrevier Ruhr junction system; Dorsten’s leisure routes also incorporate towpaths along the Lippe and the canal. This means your cycling plans can include a regional route, a specific starting point and waterside paths. As conditions on individual routes may change, check the route you have chosen before setting off.

Three routes, three distances

The Dorsten Planet Path follows the Wesel-Datteln Canal for 3.2 kilometres from the Hochstaden Bridge; eight planet markers stand along the route. The 7.3-kilometre A1 circular walk follows the Lippe to the Dorsten lock, where you can watch a lock operation over a drop of nine metres. In Hervester Bruch, the family circular walk is approximately five kilometres long and focuses on the area’s ecological history. The distances are easy to compare: at 3.2 kilometres, the Planet Path is the shortest; the family walk, at approximately five kilometres, falls in between; and the A1, at 7.3 kilometres, is the longest of the three. Each route has its own focus.

Cultural venues with different areas of focus

The Jewish Museum Westphalia invites visitors to explore Jewish religion and culture from a regional perspective, in both historical and contemporary contexts. An important point for planning your visit: all exhibition and event spaces are accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments.

Lembeck Castle brings together a Baroque moated castle, an English garden, parkland and an on-site museum. The garden’s appearance may vary depending on the season. The Old Town Hall, a Renaissance building dating from 1567, adds another historic landmark. Guided cycling tours about the history of grain and walks through the Emmelkämper Mark in Deuten expand the range of tours available. Dates and availability may change; before your trip, check whether a suitable tour is offered during your stay.

Landscape and regional orientation

Nature is part of the area’s character beyond the waterside paths: the northern part of Dorsten lies within a nature park. In the wider Recklinghausen destination, long-distance cycling routes in the Recklinghausen district are signposted and run mostly away from main roads. This regional context provides guidance for cycling plans that extend beyond local routes. You can shape your trip around a long-distance route, a themed trail, the landscape or a cultural venue, and choose the highlights that suit your stay.
