For a stay in Oer-Erkenschwick, you can choose between nature trails, mining history and a viewpoint as different focal points. The Haard offers a landscape of hills, valleys and trails; from the Ewald-Fortsetzung spoil tip, the view extends across Oer-Erkenschwick, Datteln and the Haard. The Mining Museum complements these themes with the history of coal mining.
Hiking and cycling in the Haard
The Haard is the largest contiguous forest area in the Hohe Mark Nature Park. Hills and high points, quiet dry valleys, and narrow and wide trails shape the landscape. At 157 metres, the Stimberg is the highest elevation in the Haard. For a multi-stage hike, the Hohe Mark Steig is one specific option: its fifth stage and part of its sixth pass through the Haard. A cycling route follows the Haardgrenzweg, passes the Stimbergpark and continues towards Katenkreuz in Datteln. This lets you distinguish between a multi-stage hiking route and a cycling route when planning, without combining them into a single route.
At the Stimberg access point, there is a car park at Ahsener StraĂźe 97; the distance to the Stimberg is about 600 metres. If you include the Stimberg in your plans, this gives you a specific landmark to navigate to.
Views and mining history
The Ewald-Fortsetzung spoil tip offers a different perspective from the forest trails. Its 130-metre-high summit has a viewpoint overlooking Oer-Erkenschwick, Datteln and the Haard. After the climb, there is a place to rest, while you can also take in the former mining site.
The Mining and History Association was founded in 2002 to preserve the mining history of Oer-Erkenschwick. Tours at the Mining Museum begin with a historical overview of how coal formed and the technology used to produce it. Original mining equipment is on display in the underground area. Groups can book tours; visitors can also come without a tour during opening hours. Check the opening hours if you plan to visit without a tour, or book a tour as a group.
More destinations and planning
The municipal Tourist Information Office provides brochures and maps to help plan visits to Oer-Erkenschwick. As of June 2026, maritimo Beach has a 25-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a diving pool with one- and three-metre boards. Check the operating conditions before your visit.
When choosing a base for your overnight stay, you can first decide whether forest trails, mining history, the view from the spoil tip or swimming should shape your stay. These priorities can guide your further planning without requiring every destination to fit into a fixed itinerary. If you are looking for a hotel, you can base your choice on what you would like to experience during your stay.
