Hoheward spoil tip and industrial heritage
The Dragon Bridge connects the district park in Recklinghausen-Hochlarmark with Hoheward spoil tip. The Recklinghausen substation, an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Route, is located near the spoil tip. This means there is both a connection between park and spoil tip and a separate industrial heritage destination to explore. If you are interested in landscapes and the history of technology, these places provide a thematic framework for choosing your activities.
The Recklinghausen substation is Germany’s largest electricity museum and features, among other things, a plasma globe, a walk-through tram and historic kitchen appliances that visitors can try out. The exhibition thus brings together technology, a tram visitors can walk through and objects from everyday life in the past. If you are interested in industrial heritage, this offers a different perspective from the bridge and spoil tip: the focus is on specific exhibits.
Culture and travel dates
A horizon observatory and a sundial sit together at the summit of Hoheward spoil tip. If you would like to include the observatory in your visit, check the RVR’s latest information about visitor access in advance.

Cycling and hiking trails, riding trails
Cyclists can choose from signposted long-distance cycling routes in the Recklinghausen district, most of which run away from main roads. The RVR Hoheward Visitor Centre’s additional information point is located directly on the Emscher Park Cycle Path, near the Dragon Bridge. During the main season from April to October, it is open on weekends and public holidays and offers information and personal advice. Check the latest opening details if you plan to seek advice for your cycling tour.
The Recklinghausen district has a riding trail network stretching over 300 kilometres. The Haard forests have more than 100 kilometres of riding trails. The Hohe Mark Trail, which opened in 2021, and other hiking routes lead to Stimberg and run through the Haard in a way that is considerate of nature. The details vary by activity: hiking routes specify a destination and course, while the kilometre figures for riding give an indication of the size of the networks. If you would like to choose a tour based on a specific destination, Stimberg provides a clearly identified point of reference.

In the associated municipality of Haltern am See, the LWL Roman Museum presents the town’s 2,000-year history. The Aliso Roman Park is one of the area’s most notable visitor attractions.
